I've never been out of the country, so my brother has surprised me with an offer to pay my airfare anywhere for my 40th. We want to stay for 10 days (or so) in May/June. With travel time, I expect we'd be gone almost 2 weeks. Whatever we do, I want a boat to be involved (i.e., a chartered boat).
Pretend you're Carmen Sandiego. Where would you go?
Tahiti!!! I know someone who went last year and had an amazing time. She has traveled all over the world and said it was her favorite place she has ever been. It looks like the best time to go is between May and October so that fits your timeframe. What a great gift!!

I'm thinking Greece and Santorini, but I think Venice would also be amazing. I also have a dream of going to Thailand for the beaches, but my brother has already been. Plus I want to charter a boat so going to have to wait until I'm rich and famous.
HeartofCheese, Venice is pretty amazing! But, there's not a lot to "do" there. We spent our time there just wandering the city and eating delicious food. We did a couple tours of historical places, but I'm having a hard time thinking of enough stuff to do for 10 days there. Maybe pair it with somewhere else?
I went to New Zealand/ Australia in July several years ago, it's pretty cold and wet. I've done London and Dublin, which are nice, and easy flights. Paris is also lovely, I went a few years ago, it was just really hot in June, I got sunburned waiting for the Eiffel Tower.
I want to go back to Europe. With 10 days you could hit up a lot of places. Scandanavia is on my list. As well as England/ Ireland/ Scotland and take a boat across the channel to France.
I love Spain. I feel like since I have been to Spain, I am not as interested in doing Greece and Italy etc and I want to see more northern countries, but you could definitely do a Mediterranean cruise and go to Greek Islands.
Norway was nice a few years ago, although it is super pricey. Also, this thread makes me look like I travel for fun more than I do, really it's mostly for work, but I always try to take an hour or two out for fun.
What is your travel goal? Cram a lot to see in? Lay on a beach and relax?
If I wanted to see a lot, I would go to the British Isles. Tons to see, they speak English (sort of, in some areas, lol), and it's really fun. Also, weather in the summer is pretty good.
If I wanted to lay on a beach and unwind, Tahiti or Fiji or Bali.

I'm 100 years old at heart so if a boat is to be involved, I would do a Viking River Cruise. Travel through Europe with gourmet food, wine, and a butler? Sign me up!
Come visit meee! We can make the boat thing happen!
Brazil? I'd spend half the trip gazing and flying in a helicopter around the giant Jesus. And the other half on the beach/gazing into the water in the middle of the ocean. Sounds wonderful...

I'm a laidback traveler. I go to relax. So for a 10-day trip, I'd either do 2-3 days jam-packed with lots of sightseeing or just see a thing a day, but spend either the morning or afternoon relaxing on the beach. I'm also going with my brother who I think would enjoy some time to himself rather than playing caretaker to me.
My brother got all the energy in the family. Apparently my mom only had so much to give in the womb. So after a long day, he'll still be ready for the nightlife and then the next day want to do some serious hiking or mountain climbing or goat-wrestling or whatever. It will be very interesting to see how we travel together... Point being, a cruise would be great for him b/c we can do our own things. If we were in a hotel, I think I'd be very nervous about leaving and doing things on my own and he would feel pressure to stick around. With someone, I'm crazy adventurous, but alone? Afraid to die.
What about an all-inclusive? So your brother can para-sail or scuba or whatevs while you bask in the sun with a trashy book under an umbrella with hot cabana boys bringing you frozen pink alcohol? (whispers furtively "take me with you!)
I never opened this because I thought it was about the actual Carmen Sandiego lol.
I have heard Thailand is amazing. You can spend like a month there and Trent an apartment and use it as home base, and then take trains and planes to other parts of Asia for a couple days here and a couple days there, and it is very inexpensive.
