I applied for an internal promotion and was one of the first to be interviewed. The interview was amazing. They told me they were interviewing people that week and the next and expected to get back to me the following (i.e., this) week or next.
Yesterday, I spoke to a coworker who spoke to another person who had applied and she told me that he told her that there was going to be a second round of interviews with a higher-up. Which is news to me.
So do you think this is a plan that developed after I was interviewed because they had so many promising candidates? Or do you think I just wasn't on their list to go to the second round? Either way, I realize I'm still going to find out this week or next, but it sure would be great to have some clairvoyance on the matter.
FWIW: Almost everyone who has been hired in the last 10 years applied for this position - which is about 10-15 people.

It seems like most places have a hiring process in place and you would know upfront what the next steps are. It's possible there were a lot of candidates but I've also known many higher ups who say one thing then change their mind so maybe they decided they wanted to be involved at the last minute?
That person may have asked about next steps, and the response sounds generic - in that there is a second round of interviews coming, not that this person will be in a second round of interviews.
I work for a huge company and I never know what to expect for the hiring process. Try to be patient, so hard!!

2nd round interviews are very common at my office. It especially happens when there isn't a consensus for who to pick, which if there were so many people who applied could definitely be a possibility. If there is a clear winner at my office, they would forego the second interview.
I would assume second round interviews because of the large number of people that applied, or they were having a hard time deciding maybe, and like you said higher ups may want to be more involved. H's last job involved 5 rounds of interviews- it was crazy.
But you don't know anything for sure until you hear it from them.
