I'm creating an anti-racism, pro-equality and acceptanceunit, using current events like Charlottesville and Ferguson. I've got several articles from NEwsELA on the history of the KKK, the history of freedom songs in civil rights protests and demonstrations, the events of Charlottesville, and the coloring book peace project in Ferguson.
Beyond reading about and discussing the information, I want to add an action element to this unit. But I'm not really sure what that could be.
I teach a 2nd/3rd grade combo class of high achievers and GATE students in Southern California. My school is primarily Hispanic, with a large population of African American students as well.

"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
