I will try and make this as clear as possible.
My company is doing a re-org and my current position will no longer exist. They are splitting my job in to two different functions: Operations and Account Management. In my state, there are three Ops and AM teams that split up all the accounts and work on them, which is like how it is now. My boss oversees 5 contracts & directors (which is what I am).
Now, my boss told me that she wants me to stay with her on the AM side. The head of the Ops group in my region also told me that she wants me to join her group, if I have interest. The only tough thing, she is waiting to hear about positions. I'm fairly certain she will have openings, but I am not 100% right now. I have a meeting with my boss on Monday, and I have a feeling I will have to tell her which way I am leaning. Right now, I think I'd rather do Ops, but really only if I can stay in my current region as I know the contracts, know the players, etc.
I'm not sure how to tell my boss this, without burning a bridge. I REALLY like working under her, and I wouldn't be opposed to staying in her group if it boiled down to it. Thoughts?
I'd (very, very gently!) turn it around on your current boss to ask her when the available AM positions will be finalized. Basically - I'd dodge.
What I'd say if/when pressed: - You love working for current boss and would be happy to continue to do so (true, but you are not agreeing to a position in this verbiage) - You have a great interest in the Ops team positions, but that your impression is that they do not currently have openings (true - right? But still, she won't be shocked if later you say you've just been notified about a new Ops position and you're going) - You are excited to see how the changes shake out for the company, because it seems like a good growth opportunity for you and boss and her group (you know, true, but noncommittal)

chalupa, so, the AM positions are pretty finalized. She told me, confidentially of course, there will be 3 positions (which is kind of sticky because there are four of us now) and she sent me the job description. The only factors I don't know is if the position will be remote (initially it was but then the last time I talked to her, she was flip flopping and saying they may be office based) and what accounts would be with which AM directors. I'm afraid of screwing myself out of a job with her, given she doesn't have enough for all of us. But, I also don't know if she'd help me get a job in Ops, if that is what I wanted. She previously told me to tell her so she could help make it happen but...
