Spelling

I teach grade 5, and our district doesn't have any directives regarding spelling instruction. I used to teach it, but haven't in a few years (I do a vocabulary program instead that focuses on the meaning of the words).
I'm wondering what the general consensus is around this.

We use the Words Their Way developmental spelling. With a side of Word Journeys. Each teacher does word study and spelling tests in developmental groups. Most teachers have 3 spelling lists per week.

I would choose to get the WTW word sort books at the two levels you are most likely to use vs the how to book.

We use Words their Way for K-3. I love it (I teach 3rd). I give the inventory and you use it to pinpoint the exact skill to start with for each student.

4th grade in my school does Words their Way for students that still need it, and then they move into a program called Wordly Wise for 4th and 5th grade. It is a vocab program instead.

Like UMaineTeach said, we mostly have 3 lists per week but I had 4 for a while last year. We do trade students among the other classes if we need to fit students into the right group without needing 6 groups.
