Hey! We are not actually in Houston at the moment-- we decided to head to my in-laws for the weekend as we were just not prepared to ride the storm out in our apartment. I have NO idea what our neighborhood looks like, but school has been cancelled for Monday and Tuesday, so I'm guessing they are anticipating some road issues.
sandj82110 - thanks for checking in! I've been glued to the local news and trying to relay info to my parents. They still have power for now, but no tv or internet and are SE of Houston. Some friends and family have taken on water, but it's not quite to the doors of my parents and they've been told to shelter in place. The news footage and FB photos are awful, but everyone is safe.
I don't live there, but one of our shops at work is in rockport which took a direct hit. From what I've heard, the shop lost all windows and doors, so I'm sure there is a lot of damage.
Our employees all got out safe. One sent me this picture. Their place is the one all the way to the right still standing.
Thankfully most of my family has remained dry so far, although it's still raining. I hate being several hours away, especially now that it looks like my trip down next week to visit my grandmother is off.

Have you been able to see how your apartment is? Hoping it is okay for you guys when you return
We went today. The complex took on water and was totally evacuated. We knew it was bad when one of the citizen rescue crew shot a video of the apartments from his jet ski
We got insanely lucky-- the water only got up to 4ish feet in our unit. We were able to salvage almost everything except Alex's school supplies, our roku, some books, and food and toiletries.
Our house that we are under contract to buy made it through unscathed. No damage and no water, just a lot of debris in the yard. Our moving truck stayed completely dry in its warehouse. Our sweet dog is completely dry and safe in her kennel.
So, even though we are technically homeless at the moment, we are going to be fine.
This is what exceedingly fortunate looks like after Harvey, I'm afraid...
If you haven't already, please consider donating to the Harvey recovery effort. The pictures and reporting coming out of Houston don't begin to cover the immense scope of the disaster. Some peoples entire houses were almost underwater. The local library and YMCA took on upwards of 6' of water. Our police station flooded. It's just unbelievable.
Thanks for the good thoughts guys! We are really ok. Since we are mid- company relocation, the apartment was a temporary stopping point for us. We literally went in, got our stuff, turned in our keys, and walked away. The company housing coordinator is looking to see if she can find us another place, but we have family in the area or there is a chance that we could move into our new house before we close in temporary leasing arrangement with the seller. Our situation is inconvenience and a small loss of property, which as I mentioned is just unbelievably fortunate.
I hope this doesn't come off as breezy. The devastation is real and profound. I posted the pictures mainly to just show what so many, many people are dealing with. The tossed furniture, the mud, the ruined walls, and the smell! Have you ever been hiking and waded in a creek, and when you get back you accidentally leave your wet shoes in your hot car? It's that smell mixed with old food and humidity. And it's all over everything that used to be your home. I have relatives that haven't been able to go home yet (but are expecting the worse since their neighborhood was basically a lake) and others who spent today ripping out all the furniture, drywall, insulation, and flooring down to the studs and slab in the first floor of their home. And they will be able to rebuild-- there are SO many who won't.
