What kind of dishwasher do you have? Do you love it or hate it? Mine died last weekend and doing dishes by hand is getting old. I'm not looking to spend a ton, but I need a starting point. Our current one was 5 years old. That seems young to me. Am I crazy?
My Bosch is so quiet I can't tell it's running. It's 14 years old and other than a button that got pushed in weird (my uncle was able to fix it) I haven't had any problems with it.
I also have a whirlpool in our other house and hate it. It was $400 I think from Costco. It's louder than I like and feels cheaply made. It was a bandaid machine because we are planning a kitchen remodel so I don't really care but I wouldn't recommend it for a long term dishwasher.

Before we bought or house we had a Bosch in our rental/my mom's house. I miss that one so much. It cleaned really well and was basically silent.
A word of caution, though. The lowest end Bosch is called the ascenza. That one isn't actually made by Bosch and isn't up to their quality standards. You need to go for the Bosch 500 to get one made by then.
We had a Kitchenaid in our last house and I loved it.
We got a Samsung (it's one that has the "waterfall" feature) and I hate it. I mean it cleans well and is relatively quiet, but I've found out that my dishes just don't fit well in it. Like some of the plates only fit in certain positions, and the wine glasses always tip over. I've told DH that next time we're dishwasher shopping I swear to God I'm bringing a big box of my dishes with me so I can load the dishwasher we like right in the store to make sure it will work for my dishes before we buy it.
I really like my Bosch (ours broke about 3 years ago and we got the Bosch). It is quiet and cleans well. I like the layout and can get a lot in it. I love the third, top rack for utensils, sippy cup parts, and small dishes. I would recommend it, but that said, we did have a problem. We had a weird issue where water somehow got into the base and then the pump runs continuously until you actually shut off the power to the machine. You can't stop it in any other way. We had someone come and do a crappy job fixing it and the problem recurred. the next time we had the recommended people come out and they did a very good, thorough job of cleaning it up and inspecting it. They couldn't figure out what caused water to get in initially and couldn't locate any leaks, but they made sure it was all dried out and we haven't had any problems since.
