I work at a school that is 97% Black. Previous administration was Black and HBCU grads. They decorated a hall with school flags from HBCUs, only HBCUs. I noticed today that our PWI state school has been added in the mix. The new principal is a white male and I know he put it there. I am pissed! I want to say something about it but I'm a district employee assigned to this building and I'm only here once a week. I don't go to staff meetings so I don't know if this was something agreed on or discussed with the staff. Maybe I already missed the fight. Lol.
So am I wrong for being mad about the PWI flag being added? I just really love the display and think it's awesome for the kids to see constant reminders of HBCUs. Plus the PWI is basically synonmous with the state and its symbols are everywhere you go.

At the risk of being flamed, internally, I would probably roll my eyes. Externally, if he's adding it because he wanted to have his alma mater represented, then he can't help he went to a PWI.
If he did it as a FU type of thing, I'm not sure how one would go about saying it without it becoming a "thing". He may counter with reverse racism and how it's not fair only HBCUs are represented. But again, staff can't help if they went to an HBCUs.
I've visited schools with similar set ups of flags of the schools they went to, and only saw one HBCU.
I'm not trying to minimize you being pissed, I get it, but I don't think I'd say anything. If anything, and the staff and teachers are annoyed, I'd put the flag in my personal classroom or office.
I worry more about a white principal in a school of mostly minority students and teachers.
orangeblossom your last sentence is definitely a feeling in the community, and if I'm being 100% honest, we were all a bit put off by him being placed there. But to be fair, there was a lot of rumbling last year when a Black admin was moved from a predominantly Hispanic school to a predominantly black school so staff can't be trusted to be rational or logical. Lol.
Because only 1 school was added I'm going to assume he did it represent his alma mater. The display wasn't just the alma maters of staff members, but a reprentation and show of love for HBCUs. 50 or so schools are displayed and he didn't remove any. I just don't think he truly understood the purpose of the flags. You're right about it being mostly eye roll worthy. I'll just grumble about it with the secretaries.

Are there cameras? Problem solved. I kid. He probably doesn't get it. I would leave probably mention it as a compliment of the wonderful HBCU display. Blah blah it being awesome for the kids to he introduced to HBCUs etc and say you noticed a PWI school that was probably put up in error. Keep it super light. See how it goes. Good luck.

There are definitely cameras, lol. I'll feel out some of the staff I'm friends with. Since I'm only there once a week I could have missed the kerfuffle and everyone has moved on.

Yeah, that's a good idea. Don't make a stink but be prepared if there's an opening. Black people cant have anything! 😊😉
