I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow. I have longish (just past shoulders), straight hair and no bangs. Seems like no matter what I do, it pretty much turns out the same. I'm thinking of getting it a little shorter with a long side swept bang and some extra layers, but I haven't had any bangs in YEARS. Have you had this? Would it be fun or just be a giant PITA having hair hanging in my face?
ETA: I feel like my hair looks like boring, plain "mom hair" and it's in a ponytail half the time. I want it to look like more of a style, but I also don't want to spend much time on it. Right now I don't even blow dry.

Lol - your avatar has long side-swept bangs (FTR, it looks good, but it's also a cartoon).
I've tried doing bangs a couple of times and for me, it just doesn't work. I have a bit of natural wave to my hair, so with the slightest humidity (even in the middle of winter) they end up looking wonky and sort of curling out in different directions. So in my case, I prefer no bangs. My hair is just past the shoulders and I add some layers in to give it more movement.
I think I'd probably ask your stylist what they'd recommend. A good stylist has an "eye" for what will suit your face, and you can also ask about what you'd need to do styling-wise if you do go the bangs route. I think bangs and no-bangs can both look nice, but different styles look better on different people.
I've had side-swept bangs forever - they suit me far more than none.
That said, they wouldn't be too hard to grow out because they can blend well with the side of my hair if I wanted them to.
I feel like you in the fact that my hair is always a variation on the same style. For me, it's layers and side bang - length varies from chin to mid back (longer suits me better, but every so often I get fed up and chop it off, but always regret it)
I have longish hair with long side swept bangs. I love them. They are just long enough they get pulled back into a ponytail or bun most days. But look great down too and livens up otherwise boring hair. I never blow dry - just brush wet and air dry. I use hair oil, dry shampoo, or hairspray to smooth out frizzy or flyaways in the morning (but don’t brush my hair). My hair has a natural wave and gets more curly/frizzy when it’s humid.

Not to threadjack, but can someone explain to me how sideswept bangs work? I've tried to have them several times, but I end up with just shorter hair off to the side, not hair that comes over my forehead if that makes sense. I've been told that to get them to fall down more, I need to blow dry them to the opposite side, then sweep them across, and I've tried that, but within an hour they still end up all the way over. I think the problem is that any time my hair is down, I push it behind my ears and have for decades now. But I'd still love some actual side-swept bangs if I could re-train my hair to fall that way!

Sounds like your might just be a little too long.
When mine get too long, they end up doing exactly what you are describing. It doesn't take much training to get them to fall properly - and I generally just use the straightener to keep them separate. (I pull it through my hair across my face, opposite to where my bangs fall) I can blend mine into my hair or have them look like bangs - which is all the time when I wear my hair up.
