I’m looking for some recommendations about picture/story books that deal with the idea of having to make a hard choice, how doing the right thing isn’t always easy, and that it’s normal to feel conflicted. I have grade 5s, nearly all boys. I’m looking for a few books to open up dialogue with the kids. I had a student bring a knife to school, and while it stayed in his backpack during school time, he brought it out after school. Some of the boys saw it, and one finally reported it to his parents (but was wracked with guilt- to tell or not to tell). My principal wants me to address it with my class.

The Red Kayak-here’s an Amazon description. I would read it first, just to make sure that your students are able to handle the content. Brady loves life on the Chesapeake Bay with his friends J.T. and Digger. But developers and rich families are moving into the area, and while Brady befriends some of them, like the DiAngelos, his parents and friends are bitter about the changes. Tragedy strikes when the DiAngelos’ kayak overturns in the bay, and Brady wonders if it was more than an accident. Soon, Brady discovers the terrible truth behind the kayak’s sinking, and it will change the lives of those he loves forever. Priscilla Cummings deftly weaves a suspenseful tale of three teenagers caught in a wicked web of deception.
