Im having a really hard time getting through this one. The first 3 you couldnt pry out of my cold dead hands.. I dont know why. I think it has something to do with them being in America now.

It's been many a moon since I read this one but I seem to think this was a slower one, how far are you? Jamie's nephew, Ian, has a good storyline in this one, or maybe it's the next...
Geez I may have to re-read this series because gah, I can't remember a lot of details.

They save Ian from Gillie and then they wash ashore in South Carolina i think... they go up to Jaimes Aunt Jacosta.
I am on page 257. They just found the girl that tried to have her baby aborted and died.
Me too. I started this one LAST March and am still only halfway through it. I feel like the story is going absolutely nowhere.
good point. the action hasnt slowed down, its not boring... its just different. In the other books they had a goal that i felt would be met at the end of the book... This one there is nothing. I almost wish there was more chapters about Roger & Bree than Jaime & Clare.
It picks up a bit. I agree that it was super slow and probably my least favorite (mostly because of not enough Roger & Bree and too much Ian who I don't really care for). The next one (Fiery Cross) is way better imo.

Oh my gosh, that book was SO SLOW for me. It just dragged and dragged. I thought I'd never finish it.
You're on page 257? I read on my Nook, so I'm unclear how it translates to real page numbers, but it will pick up a LOT from where you are. I think the beginnings of all Diana Gabaldon's books are slow (even Outlander).
I'm not going to lie. Drums of Autumn is the slowest book in the series. But it's worth it, assuming you love the characters. Not just so that you can get to the rest of the books, but for what happens in that book as well (once you get past the beginning).
Also -- I'm going to give you fair warning here. Drums of Autumn will (eventually) pick up for you. Then you'll reach The Fiery Cross which opens with the longest day ever written into a novel. I swear, you read and read and read and you're 200 pages in, and it's not even lunch time.
But once you get past that never ending day at the beginning of Fiery Cross, the series just picks up speed until you really can't put it down. I loved Outlander, I liked Dragonfly in Amber through Fiery Cross. Then the last two books I basically did nothing else but read until I finished the series. Then I read the Lord John books like they were methadone. :-)
The more I read, the more I cared about characters other than Jamie and Claire. And don't worry -- there's lots on Bree and Roger!

ok - now it's coming back to me, yup this is one of the filler ones. The next one will be a lot better as PP mentioned. However, I seem to this there is some foreshadowing in this book so I suggest just skimming.

So true! I could not believe it when I realized I was halfway through the book and still on the opening day. (OK, I might be exaggerating a bit.)
Seriously, though, I do find that I can't read these books all back to back--I have to read some other things between them.
Awww. DoA might be tied with Outlander itself as my favorite of the series! But I am aware that I am the only person on earth who feels this way. Most people like TFC much more.
