My ds is horribly hard on tennis shoes. No matter what brand, he wears through the soles (like to the point where there's a hole in the bottom of the shoe) usually halfway through the school year and again in the spring. So I buy him a new pair for the start of school and then a new pair around Christmas. He ONLY wears these shoes to school. I then buy him cheap/consignment shoes to be 'play' shoes, and he also has a fleece-lined crocs for winter, and those are what he wears any time he's not in school (oh, and church shoes too). During the summer he pretty much only wears crocs because those last the entire summer (sometimes even 2 summers!) and that's what he prefers.
My dd has a ridiculous amount of shoes and has never outworn any of them before outgrowing them. Like right now in the 'shoe pile' by the door, she has a pair of tennis shoes, a pair of floral canvas shoes, a pair of black athletic mary janes, 2 pairs of boots, a pair of dressier gold mary janes, a pair of brown mary janes, and a pair of navy blue with rainbow stars mary janes that are her favs. She wears whatever matches her outfit best (will wear black, brown, or gray boots most of the winter except for gym days). She usually gets 2 years out of a lot of shoes because her feet don't grow very fast and she doesn't wear them out.
Their every day sneakers are probably every 3 months replacement. I try to keep the OLD ones as play shoes for overlap and save new ones for school.
But their cleats and running shoes (XC) for sports will last until they outgrow them. Average is about 2 seasons.
But Basketball for example is only used for 8 weeks and are carried into and out of the gym so these I have been able to pass down as hand me downs.
ETA: How many winter fall Winter/Fall shoes Sneakers 2 pair (athletic and stylish like converse or vans). Replaced as they get nasty. Basketball Winter Boots
also, we buy sneaker balls and those help cut way down on the stink.
DS is 7. He has hiking boots, church shoes (2 pairs), sneakers, flip flops, and water shoes. The only thing he wears out is the sneakers. He probably goes through a pair about every 4 months. he doesn't get holes in the soles, more like the actual sneaker part. DD is 5, and she has a lot of shoes. dress shoes, fancy sandals, plain sandals, water shoes, sneakers, fashion boots, pink boots, mary janes, I don't even know what else. She typically outgrows them before she destroys them. The exception being the last pair of pink boots, which she wore everywhere and they ended up looking pretty ragged.
For DS's sneakers, it doesn't matter what brand. He goes through them all.
DS goes through a pair of running shoes about once a season; so for Fall, we bought him a new pair for start of school, and I can see they'll be "done" wear-wise by November. At that time, he'll start wearing winter boots to school every day anyway, though. He also has a pair of "indoor" running shoes that stay at school; hopefully those will last through the winter, we'll see...
He also has a pair of "nicer" lace-up shoes that he wears mostly on the weekends if we're just going out shopping, etc. Those have lasted him since the Spring and are still in pretty good shape. He'll outgrow them soon, though.

I’ve been lucky that they’ve worn them until they’re outgrown. Dd1 can pass hers down to dd2 most of the time and those are trashed by the time dd2 is done with them. If dd2 gets new shoes they may be passed on to dd3, but not as often bc dd2 is so hard on her shoes. Currently they have- Dd1 - 3 pairs of tennis shoes (neighbor have her two more and if already bought a new pair), 2 pairs of Mary Jane style dress shoes, winter boots Dd2- tennis shoes, dress shoes, brown suede boots and winter boots Dd3 - tennis shoes, fake uggs, and winter boots My goal is always 1 each of tennis shoes, dress shoes and either boots or sandals depending on the season. I am not a fan of sorting or storing dozens of shoes per child.
My boys have just a few pairs. DS1 - Sneakers, crocs and a pair of flip flops. Sneakers last about 9 months, crocs about 6 months and flip flops are rarely worn so they get outgrown. Ds2 - only wears crocs and has two pairs that get replaced as needed or outgrown. We buy DS1 a nice pair as needed like when he goes to a weddding and those are worn once or twice and then get handed down.
Each kid gets snow boots if needed when we go skiing/ up to the snow. I’ve got lots of friends with boys so there’s a lot of sharing snow boots since each family goes up to snow just a few times a year.
They all have: -rain boots -warm winter boots -good everyday sandals for summer -flip flops for the big kids -a dressier pair of sandals for the girls/boat shoes for DS -tennis shoes--probably 2-3 pairs/year for the bigger kids. -Dressy shoes for the holiday season (usually Mary Janes for the girls and black dress shoes of some sort for DS) -Shoes to go with Easter/spring dresses as needed
Pretty much everything gets handed down EXCEPT for the sneakers and every-day summer sandals. Sometimes the outdoor boots are too worn out.
DS (6) has nothing else right now. Oh, except soccer cleats. The girls have tons more shoes than him! Some b/c they needed a special pair to go with something, and others b/c they were just a great deal. They tend to usually have one or two pairs of boot shoes (at least) for winter, plus some different fun flats or tennis shoes. DD1 (8) has two pairs of boots (boot shoes, not winter boots), a pair of silver star flats, and a pair of black "kitty" flats, a pair of high-tops with pineapples, and a pair of red Converse hi-tops for Halloween that she can/will wear and we will hand down! DD2 & DD3 have tons of shoes! Between new and hand-me-downs they have a lot. DD3 is 2.5 and she LOVES "pretty shoes" lately.
My kids usually have 2 pairs of shoes per season. DD is 10 and will have running sneakers ($100+) and casual sneakers ($40) in the fall/winter. In the spring/summer she will get a new pair of running sneakers ($100+) and sandals ($40). DS is 7 and in the fall/winter just has sneakers ($40) and in the spring/summer will have sandals ($40) and sneakers ($40). We live in MD and usually get snow but I can usually get away with either not buying snow boots or relying on hand me downs.
