Vent: DD has a cough. No fever, no other symptoms. Just a little congested cough. This morning was legit cold outside. She had cheerleading for a football game. So we got her dressed, got her stuff, dropped off DS at my MIL's and hoofed it to the football game. Where only 4 boys from our team and 3 boys from the other team showed up. And one other cheerleader. No sponsor, no coaches, no messages to say we weren't showing up today.
What the hell happened to teaching your kids about what it means to be part of a team and keeping commitments and all that stuff? Shit like this really irritates me. We could have kept DD home to keep her and her cough out of the cold, but we showed up. So our lesson about how your team depends on you and how when you make a promise you follow through turned into a lesson how some people are just flakes and we never want to be them. Because they suck.
k3am our closest Costco is an hour away so I'm not sure that's possible.
Hmm.. ours is about 2 mins away, so obviously we didn't have that issue. You can always check online and see if it's an option. Best case scenario, yes, worst case scenario, you wasted 5 minutes?

We found a nice Frigidaire at Menards (A regional lowe's type of store) that's doing an 11% rebate sale starting tomorrow plus DH gets another 2% with his credit card, so my new dishwasher will be ordered tomorrow.
mommyatty, WHAT?!?!?! That is outrageous! I can't believe the coaches didn't show or communicate!
DD's team won their game today by the skin of their teeth in OT. So they get to go to the "ship" tomorrow and play the team they played on Thursday night. Could be a good game; they barely won the other night. I am so over football. I have talked DD into playing indoor soccer. I honestly think she will like it better than other sports. She loves basketball but it is just not a long term possibility at her (lack of) height. The gap between her an other kids her age just keeps widening too.
My kids are nuts. They are playing these games on their iPads where they trace a letter. Then after they write it correctly, stars appear and you hear cheering sounds. They are writing their letters, then for the victory dance they are clapping three times, then yelling “chug chug chug!” Then raising one arm up, putting the other hand in their armpit and yelling “WASHING OUR ARMPITS!” In perfect unison. It might be the funniest thing ever. It’s been going on for over half an hour.

mommyatty My DS1 loves that letter tracing game. I am curious as to where your kids came up with their victory dance. Kids are funny.
Additionally, a respiratory virus ran through our house recently. Only DS2 was spared. The cough lasted at least 10-days/2-weeks for DS1 and me. Other than the cough and a minor runny nose we experienced no symptoms. Ok, DS3 (baby) has some wheezing from the congestion, but he is only 6-months and has a tiny respiratory system. Hopefully your DD gets better soon.
DS1 had the best day ever yesterday. Wore his fire fighter costume and went into DH’s office. He loved riding the train and taking the shuttle (singing Wheels on the Bus). MIL picked him up from DH’s office after getting candy and took him to the children’s museum.
Today DS1 had the last swim lesson if this session and graduated to swimming without a parent. Then we had a neighbor’s son’s birthday party.
DS2 has been under the weather. He has had back to back colds and just finished the antibiotics from an ear infection. He’s been acting super fussy and sleepy lately. DH ended up bringing him to urgent care today to rule out any ongoing ear problems, but he got a cleanish bill of health. I guess just a cold and teething.
Then this evening, DS1 suddenly came down with a high fever and is clearly miserable. My sister, BIL, and their newborn were supposed to come carve pumpkins tomorrow, but canceled due to worries over catching something.

akafred, I wouldn't worry about height if C really wants to play basketball. Point guards don't have to be tall. I was tall for a point guard in HS at 5'6. Sadly, we had no height on our team my senior year and because I could jump, I jumped for the ball at the beginning of the game and played post sometimes again 6 foot+ girls.

I agree with all of this. I'm also 5'6" and played every position but point guard for my HS team. Mostly power forward. I wasn't big, but I was tough and I loved the game. I stopped playing when I got really hurt in car wreck, so I started coaching little kids.
Also, my sister is 5'4", and is a tremendous basketball player. She used to play on boys team in the city - the only girl on the team. She adjusted her shot to go straight up in the air so that the bigger kids couldn't block it. She led the league in 3-pointers for years. She gave it up in college to focus on lacrosse - she was even better at that.

You never know...
Oh I will never stand in her way. I just really don't see it being "her sport" if there is such a thing. Who knows how tall she will get but I consider 5'6" to be solidly average in a woman my age. The way things are going, 5'3" seems unlikely for her; 5'0" is a possibility. Which is fine; she still could be an amazing point guard or whatever... but realistically that is a lot harder to stand out.
Also I just hate how specialized kids are becoming even at this age! I want her to play around and find the one she enjoys the most.

This! - The last part. We did soccer lessons this summer. Other than that we are concentrating on physical therapy instead of sports. Sports are good for him too but there are only so many hours in the day and his super tight ankles could lead to injuries. I would rather take care of his ankles and hips and do sports next year. Plus I read that when they do sports super young and competitively they burn out. I would rather he play in middle school / high school. Rather than now and burn out. But there is so much pressure at this age- 7 - to play sports. And when I ask the coach all they are doing is wandering around like herding cats anyway. I'll for sure sign up next year, but it's like I am the only one who didn't put him in groups sports this year. It's crazy. We were just focusing on individual stuff for coordination like gymnastics and skiing and people think that's weird. I mean they don't come out and say that but I can tell.
I didn't realize 7 was the magic age where a boy had to be in a league.
I hate the focus on single sports now. I started playing basketball and softball when I was 6, but I only played seasonally. As I got older, I played on multiple teams, but during the traditional season. So basketball in the winter, softball in the spring and summer.
DD1 will not be an athlete, so she will stick to seasonal play. If we don't push sports, she will be way too inactive and sloth-like. DD2 is very fast and very coordinated, and also very competitive. She is really into her instructional soccer, and her coach encouraged us to sign her up for the next level - a 6 on 6 indoor league. It seems crazy. She's 4. By we're going to try and see what happens. We may focus on soccer more with her because she loves it, and she has declared her hatred for basketball (like a knife through my heart) - killing the feasible winter sport.
This is my soapbox. It's like you are forced to pick what sport you want to play for the rest of your life by 9. And if you just want to play rec league, around 10, you show up and 3/4 the team is a travel team.
I keep thinking about sports as how I grew up but it must have changed for the way worse. None of my kids are going to be professional athletes. Heck with how competitive it is they may not even play for their schools, and it sounds like rec leagues are pretty bad too. I don't know- I just want to teach them to work within a team and be active and healthy. But that seems like the opposite of the sports world that exists nowadays.
waverly, what I have found is that kids start around K and find a competitive coach and then stay with him for life. So even by second or third grade you have REC teams that have played together for literally years, with a coach who knows them. DD was lucky this time to get a coach who had some openings. Typically she ends up on a new team with newer kids and they fall in last place. By like first or second grade!!! And this has been so for every sport so far. It is crazy!
I coached soccer for DD1 for K and 1st, and will do the same for DD2. I don't like the sport and never really played, so I can't help past that. I will coach basketball and softball as long as I can. I won't coach anything else (lacrosse and hockey could be options, and I won't coach).
At this age, the focus should be learning and sportsmanship, not competition. I try to get every kid in every position in softball, unless I think they might get hurt. If they have a bad attitude, they get a talk and possibly benched. To be clear - "bad attitude" is not encouraging and cheering on your teammates, intentionally not congratulating after a big play. Some kids can't pay attention for that long - I get that - those are the kids that I tend to keep away from the "action" spots in Softball so that no one gets a ball to the face.
My town is very much the same way akafred - high school teams are picked before tryouts even happen. No kid has any hope of walking on. The girls varsity basketball team has made it to the state finals for the past 5 years, and won 3 titles. Parents start grooming their kids for that at age 5. My kids have no hope of participating in that. And it's a bummer. I'm not a great athlete, but I loved basketball. I went to a small enough school where I was one of the stronger players, and I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to play in an environment like that. I'm hope my kids get that, at least for a little while. I will provide it while I can.

Oh sports. Don't get me started. DS is so small. Kids have asked him at every game if he's 4. At least his team mates don't ask anymore. And he doesn't get it that he's small so he doesn't understand why they ask him that, he just thinks their weird.
On the upside, DS had his best soccer game ever. He hates to run, but he's a fabulous goalie!!!! And truthfully, I played goalie when I played soccer also, so it makes me smile.
But really, either DS gets into this goalie thing or maybe we do Karate.
DD loves gymnastics which makes me cringe just b/c of cost and also I worry about injuries. But she's got a great build for it. Also apparently cheer is huge here...I just hesitate b/c...I have a bad image of the attitudes and self esteem of cheerleaders once you get older...
waverly, depends on the town. Where we live, if my kids go to public high school, they have very little hope of playing. Next town over? They'd have a shot, but the schools aren't as good, and the taxes are more than double. It's a big reason why we are leaning toward private high school.
I think ours maybe would lean to little hope since I know the neighbor boy played baseball but was on a travel team. I mean maybe middle school and 9th grade maybe but not varsity.
mae0111 - Michaels is inconvenient here - I do pumpkin carving, novelty toys like severed finger slime, plates and alcohol when I go candy free on boo baskets!
waverly - you might be surprised - here a lot of the club kids (that so means a different thing than it used to for me haha) can’t play school ball because games/practices/travel conflict. It means DD made the team here when statistically - with only three total girls sports in junior high - it was unlikely.
Looks like DH didn't sign up for indoor soccer in time so there goes that plan. It's so aggravating. Any division of mental labor is a joke. I should have just done it myself.
