I posted this on MM Moms. Feel free to weigh in if you have any experiences to share!
My third grader will be going to her first counseling session next week for anxiety. The counselor lady was like, "Well, you can set up as many or as few sessions as you want." I was hoping for a little more direction--like some kind of general program to try for "anxiety step 1." I was thinking of doing 4-6 at one session/week and then going from there. Or every-other-week?
Has anyone been through this? Is it likely to help? How long/often did your child go?
Background: she has had mild anxiety issues for a while but it's getting worse. She pretty much just gets really nervous about anything new, or sometimes even worried about things she LIKES but that are out of the norm. I.e. beginning of the school year was really bad. She was super worried for a couple weeks and had trouble sleeping. Recently, we were going to my parents' house for a few days, and within 2 days she went from super excited about it to so nervous that she didn't want to go. She was so nervous about her first sleepover that she almost wouldn't get out of the car. She's complaining more about stomach aches, too.
In our experience, they recommend when they want to see you next during the session. For dd, the most often we went has been once a month. Her therapist also taught us coping skills that they talked about so we could help her in between sessions.
Idk if you have mentioned this, maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but do you have anxiety too? I do and my therapist recommended I take a class they offered. It was really helpful for me to recognize symptoms in myself and dd. It can also be hereditary (my grandma, my sister, myself, and dd all have been diagnosed).
I don't think I do. I would say I am maybe a little higher than average but within normal range so far. I think I had some postpartum anxiety issues, in hindsight, but didn't realize it at the time. I think my mom has it.
