Warning: Dear diary post full of deep thoughts and rambling feelings
I know there are a few of you in here having trouble TTC #2. Are the steps you take for tests and whatnot the same as someone who hasn’t had a child before? I’m so frustrated because we have conceived before. Was that a fluke and there’s really something giving us a minimal chance? Could giving birth and having wonky hormones really eff things up? What happens as we age? Is there anything that could have caused IF in my husband in that amount of time(DS is five)? Men don’t age out of fertility like women do, right? I have my CD3 blood work in the morning and have no idea what else to ask the dr. And I don’t have anyone in real life to have feelings with soooo, thanks for reading all that. 😘
I have no idea, but I’m kind of there, too. My daughter is nearly 21 months, and we’re on cycle 9 or 10. She still nurses some, but I got my period back at 6 weeks pp, despite ebf. We had some trouble with #1- took a year, and I’m not young at all, so I feel rushed. With our first, we both had preliminary testing done, and had seen the RE for our first appointment a few days before getting a BFP. I have a really short literal phase, and my H has some abnormal numbers in his count, but the RE hadn’t been super worried. I haven’t persued testing this time yet, though I likely will in a few months.

I hope I’m not butting in here since I don’t have any previous kids OR a male partner contributing sperm, but I have a couple of friends who had secondary male factor IF. I’m not sure if it’s associated with age, but sperm qualities like count, morphology, and motility can shift pretty dramatically in men over time - in both directions (can get worse or can get better). A guy who had completely normal sperm can show up with totally abnormal samples later on. I would assume the doctor will want him to go for a SA if he hasn’t had one recently, and if they don’t suggest it I’d ask for one before spending any money on further treatments (if you’re opting to go that route.)

Unfortunately an easy/successful pregnancy doesn't guarantee the same in the future just as there are people who struggle with TTC #1 and have an easy time with #2. There are a lot of things that can change over time with your body and with his. So basically yes, the steps are going to be the same because at the end of the day, you need to determine what the issue is.
You don't necessarily need to know what to ask the doctor (or shouldn't, anyway) - it's their job to guide you and tell you what needs to be done in terms of testing.
I had the blood work this morning. I need to call to schedule day 21. (Is day 21 based on the period or should this shift with later ovulation? I forgot to ask. Oops.)
She wants to wait and see what these results say before additional testing (for DH) and because we’re only at 10 months trying. I get it. And others have tried much longer. And it’s still within “normal.” Just having the “trying for a year” looming in front of us is just 😭

It should be about 7 days after ovulation so 21 is a placeholder for the "normal" ovulation on day 14. If you don't ovulate on day 14 they might want you to come in on a different day but you should ask.

Thanks! I mentioned charting and ovulating day 16-17 and she didn’t mention postponing but I’ll definitely ask when I call.

I think some docs are less particular about it, especially if you ovulate nearly on time (compared to my very late typical cd22 ovulation). They can adjust the bloodwork numbers to account for a small discrepancy as long as it's not waaaay off.
