k3am, I'm so sorry that you have to go through these medical issues with your kids. I hope it is only a cyst and it doesn't cause any problems and doesn't require surgery.
My nephew has a cyst in his brain that was found accidentally when he was around 6 or 7 (he had a head CT of his sinuses). It isn't causing any problems or symptoms, so nothing was ever done about it. He is 17 now.
I'm so, so sorry you got this news. Life is so not fair. I'll be sending positive thoughts for the best possible news at your appt with the neurosurgeon.
Personally I would steer away from baseball (flying pitches) and soccer (headers, bumping each other scrapping for balls). Basketball is probably ok. But honestly swimming, tennis, and fencing are pretty awesome sports.
Yay! I'm so glad you got pretty good news. I hope it stays stable.
My now 3-year-old son was born with a heart defect and had open heart surgery at 5 months to fix it. We're going to try to steer him away from contact sports as well. I don't think I'd be a big fan of my kids playing football or hockey anyway.
wait...what part is the cyst? Is it the park that I think it is?
Is it watch and wait b/c they think it'll go away or just too dangerous to take it out?
Tennis and swimming are good enough. He's going to be so happy. We ask little kids to do too much too soon anyway.
I look at too many brains, obviously.
The cyst is the big white part up in the top.
Apparently in the past they used to take them out or insert a shunt to drain them, but they really didn't get a whole lot of benefit from doing so vs. just leaving it alone, since most of them are asymptomatic. So they'll watch and wait to make sure it's not growing, and if it stays the same size, they'll just leave it be. If it causes issues, then they'll talk other options.

His references to heavy trauma included a 3-4 story fall, a car accident where he's propelled through a windshield, and football/hockey. So headers probably wouldn't have enough force to do anything. I have no idea how frequently pitches are flying at heads (I know it does happen), but I think baseball is boring anyways.
Oh and those are my hands on the side of his head. You haven't LIVED as a mother until you've laid on top of your child and held their head still for 30 minutes.

Dear lord pour you the wine right now. But now that I look at it knowing that, it's really quite touching, seeing your hands holding him in that picture. ❤️
Well this sounds like the best news you could have gotten today, given the circumstances, right? I'm glad there is not a need for surgery. I agree that the on contact sports can be fun. Maybe he will be an Olympic fencer (with college paid for!) bc of this.
Keep us posted. You guys really deserve a huge break now!
PS can I fake this so DS can’t play football??? Only kidding a little. Football scares the hell out of me.
They don't do tackle until MS here. I am wondering if it will fade out before long also. I said yes to DD because it was only flag football. It wasn't low contact though. Sometimes the kids bumped each other or got excited and forgot they can't tackle lol.
akafred, they start tackle in 4th grade here! And DD just cheered for kindergarten flag football and there were parents complaining they don’t have a “real football” option. In KINDERGARTEN!!! Welcome to the Lone Star State.
mommyatty, a friend's son in Arizona has been playing tackle since her first started in kinder. I'm always wondering about how you get comfortable with it. And then I remember I live in CA, and we don't trust our children to do much of anything.
Wow so many thoughts. Yea that it’s okay! Love that your hands are in it but omg holding him still for 30 mins is nuts! Contact sports are no gos anyway! Swimming is great!!! Tennis, golf, running, track, karate (I don’t think they actually fight but really don’t know).
Soccer baseball gymnastics, and basketball are all probably in the iffy space.
