We have our OT eval tonight. Does anyone have anything on what to expect or any advice? Meeting with new doctors and evals are hard for me.
For one, I get to relive the loss of DS's twin each time in the medical history part. And that never gets any easier. And depends on the doctor's response.
For two, I generally speaking receive bad news, so I feel like every time I do this I need to brace myself for more bad news.
Not to say I haven't had good appointments but they are usually after the bad news and several appointments down the line we see improvement. It's hard because in so many ways he is doing so well. He is so smart, and top of his class and has overcome so much. And then I feel like it doesn't matter because the medical professional focuses on the deficits (as they should) because that is the area in which they are trying to problem solve, and then they look at me like I have 2 heads when I tell them he is doing so well. And it's not just mommy glasses because school and the speech therapist says the same thing of how amazing he is doing.
I get this a lot with DS's IEP team and they say how great DS is and I believe it to some extent.
At the IEP meeting, I was informed by his struggles in school. Math and writing were his weaknesses.
I go to DS's parent teacher conference and he has A's in reading and math and I was in shock. All I could manage to say "Those are his grades even though he is struggling in math." The teacher assured me that all kids struggle in math.
The following week, daily report from the teacher said DS was getting an award at an award ceremony at school. I took time off work to go see DS even though I was thinking there was no way DS made honor roll. DS got most improved in Math.
Expect paperwork to do on sensory and motor issues. Then a conversation. But mostly they will put him through some exercises to target where his issues lie. Stuff like jump up and down 3 times. Here can you build a fort with these pillows? Put together this puzzle. Draw a picture of your family. Nothing too complicated, and probably fairly fun for him.
It went better than expected. I hate to say this, but overall just seems like she has a much more pleasant personality than the PT. PT is doing fine medically speaking but started out her eval PTsplaining why what the doctor wrote was wrong (it wasn't wrong just not a PT event) and trying to pass DS off on OT until she did the eval and realized he does need PT.
He did unfortunately qualify for services for OT.
We also ironically had Parent teacher conferences tonight where again the teacher had only amazing things to say and the speech teacher as well. Surprisingly the teacher did not have concerns on his handwriting, but her only criteria is if she can read it so maybe she has a low bar, but it's only first grade.
