This coming Saturday night DH and I are going to a 40th birthday party for a friend. We aren't super close friends with the couple, but their son is DS's best friend, and they were so kind as to let our kids come over to their house to wait for the bus in the morning. (The kids are there for around 45 minutes.) It's a themed birthday party - they're doing a murder mystery. My question is, should we get a gift? I can't remember the last time I went to a birthday party for an adult (unless we were at a restaurant or bar and we bought the birthday person a drink or dinner). So I thought I would ask the smartest people I know!
Normally I wouldn't, but since they are essentially providing before care for free I would step up my game more for them. Of course I have no idea what to get them though...

I was thinking booze but wasn't sure if it was enough. Maybe that plus a nice card plus something else. Oops didn't mean to quote myself.

I second booze. I would get something a step up from what you think they would normally buy. Like if they like Jack Daniels, get a single barrel bottle.

Oh oh I just thought of something else - since they seem to be into murder mystery - maybe a gift certificate to one of those escape room things? Or tickets to a local murder mystery dinner thing? Or just any type of live theatre?
A nice bottle of wine or booze is appreciated if they are drinkers. If not, some boutiques and places like that can put together nice baskets of candles soaps, toiletries and such.

I agree with the booze. Is there anything local that everyone loves? We have a local brewery here so when our new neighbors had a housewarming party, we brought them some of that since they are new to the area.
