I can’t believe I need to ask this

Because I feel like I should totally have a handle on this by now, but— make-up.

I wear it, like, four times a year. I tossed all my stuff during the move because, well, I don’t want to admit on a public forum how old some of it was.

So now I’ve got family pictures coming up in a couple of weeks, and I have nothing. I think all I need is mascara, some sort of cheek color, a foundation or powder, a concealer, a lip something, and maybe a primer. I have no idea where to start. Should I just go and have a pro do my face and buy their stuff? Do I make a trip to Ulta or Sephora? How do I even know what brands to buy?

I don’t mind spending a little money, but I will never empty a container before it goes bad, so I’d like to avoid super high end stuff that will likely just get tossed.

What's your budget for eyeshadow? And do you have any brushes?

I love you for posting this. I literally have makeup from when my friend worked at Garden Botanica in college - I graduated in 2000. I don't even know where to start.

I don't know what your look like, but this will probably look good on lots of skins and it has all the colors you need.

This is what I was using last round! I really liked it, mostly because it was pretty good proof 😁 I really might just get a fresh container but in a slightly different shade. My old container was a bit too light I think.

I do have eyeshadow brushes, but I can NEVER get eyeshadow to work. My eyes always look weird when I’ve finished— like, more deep set rather than highlighted.

I went through so many different expensive foundations and landed back on that one!

I think brushes are important. And they don't have to be expensive! NYX or elf brushes are like $1-2.

I like to use it with a brush like this with that foundation.


And for eyeshadow, get a brush like this. This one comes with the Naked palates, but I'm sure you can find something similar. One fluffy end and one smaller denser end.


I also use powder as liner on both sides of my lids.



Then watch a YouTube tutorial on how to apply. I found a good one recently. I will see if I can find it again.

You'll want to look on youtube for "hooded lid" or "hooded eye". There are SO MANY tutorials. They will make you a pro!

I think the main issue with my eyes is I have inherited under eye circles, and I’m never sure how to do eye make-up without making my eyes look sunken (so I just avoid it— ha!) I’ve never really been bothered enough to learn how to do my eyes properly, but my age is beginning to catch up with me 😁 I’ll do some you-tubing... those people are geniuses!

I've had good luck at Sephora by asking them to help me find a foundation. I've been using Make Up Forever Matte for a long time now.

There are a ton of you tube tutorials out there for eyes that I find helpful. I have a lot of Urban Decay and Tarte palletes, but you can easily find similar colors at drugstore prices and use the tutorials.

I feel you. I know nothing about make up and wear it like twice a year. Well I’m now getting bags under my eyes and don’t know where to look to help them!

I ended up ELF ing out at Target, lol. I mean, even if it doesn’t work I’m ok with experimenting with some things for that price. I went to three different stores and they were all about of the foundation shade I thought I might need, so I’m trying one that’s a little more pink and I’ll see if it looks ok. I also did a little googling and found a product for my under eye circles. It’s a little pricy, but lots of reviews had gotten good results with it, so hopefully it will work 😁.

1. Apply under eye moisturizer
2. Apply a small amount of corrector with brush
3. Apply foundation as usual
