I recall someone mentioning in the Target thread they were in the market for the Hot Wheels Ultimate garage. Anyone?
DS has an HW ultimate garage from his birthday but he keeps seeing commercials for the one with the gorilla. It's like $164 at Walmart - holy sh**. Of course it looks awesome on the commercial but I think it looks an awful lot like the one he already has w/a little plastic gorilla attached.
I've been gently nudging him towards other Hot Wheels play sets....how hard would you push your kid away from something that's so similar to what he already has and costs a quite a bit of money? I mean, I could get him like 3 other sets for the price of this thing. Of course he doesn't really get money yet (he'll be 4 in February).
I was thinking of taking him to Target or Walmart and showing him other available toys and emphasizing he can only have 1 or 2.
I'm guessing he need to bite the bullet and just buy it....

I would not try to talk him out if it. I just wouldn’t buy it. We have been talking about “you don’t get everything you ask for” and “you say thank you whether you like it or not.” My DS wants a Bruner log loader truck that’s like $100. He has a giant Bruder cement mixer that doesn’t get much play at all. He much prefers small cars and trucks when it’s actually time to play. He may be disappointed on Xmas (I hope not), but I’m not spending that kind of money on a toy i don’t think he will play with — or, in your case, a toy he essentially already has.

No, I wouldn't just buy it. I would say "you already have a toy like that, let's pick out some toys you don't have to put on your list."
FWIW, we saw that at Target this weekend & I told M the gorilla looked pretty scary so the baby might be frightened. He was like "oh you're right, let's get something else instead."
My daughter wants the newest Barbie dream house. She loves Barbies and plays with them every day, BUT we already have two dollhouses. Not tiny ones either. I have told her that Santa would not bring her a gift she does not need or already has. I told her Santa knows we do not have room for 3 dollhouses in our play area. I do feel a tiny bit bad because she does bring it up often, but I do tell her every time (in a nice way) that it is not going to happen based on the fact that we already have 2.
I just wouldn't buy it. We emphasize that it's a 'wish list' not a list of requirements.
I'd stop mentioning it and assume that come Christmas morning, there will be so much excitement (and possibly other new HW toys), he won't even notice that he didn't get that one item.

Agree with everyone else. My DS keeps finding discontinued Transformers toys (thanks YouTube Kids) and adding them to his list. I have just told him that we can't get everything we ask for, and Mom and Dad and Santa and the grandparents will work together to find him some things he likes.
I know with my son at least, he gets caught up in what he actually gets and forgets about what he didn't get.

Yeah Santa needs to clear all things with mom and dad first...which is why my daughter never got a puppy as a gift.
cricketwife, I've seen the Bruder Log truck at TJ Maxx/Marshalls every year for the past few years at the holidays, in case you'd consider it if it was cheaper (like $35ish iirc). My ds has a few Bruder trucks, all from those stores, and even at 8 he still plays with them, so they were well worth it, but I would never have paid more for them.

Thanks! I’ll keep an eye out. I haven’t seen that particular one there before. I probably still won’t buy it because he doesn’t play with the cement mixer, but if I found one under $25, I’d would consider it.
Same situation here. They have the HW garage from last year and really want the new one. I just said “Santa has other toys he thinks you want since you have the same one.”
And then I just ignore the other requests for it and won’t buy it lol
I think I'd suggest buying a gorilla (they have them at Target and Michael's) and attaching it to the track, and tell him that way he gets the gorilla AND a totally new toy that he doesn't have. I wouldn't buy a nearly identical toy.
We have the HW Ultimate Garage from last year (my IL's bought it) and he's been eyeing the new one. I already told him no. He's got a zillion toys and the Ultimate Garage is already huge (and expensive!) - he doesn't need the new one.
