My 12 YO son is a voracious reader. We used to go to the library every other week and check out physical books until we purchased a Kindle for him last Christmas. He still enjoys reading a physical book, but is using his Kindle more and more.
He can check out ebooks at our community library, but he says the selection isn't very good. I'm considering buying an ebook subscription for him for a Christmas present. Any opinions on Kindle Unlimited? Good selection? Any additional perks? Would you recommend a different service other than Kindle Unlimited?

Do you have Amazon Prime? I think Kindle Unlimited comes with Prime so you'd be able to download any kindle unlimited book. I've found some good stuff on kindle unlimited, but I'm not sure what the selection would be for a 12 year old boy. I'm assuming they have good stuff, although probably not anything super new. I know the HP series is on kindle unlimited.
I'd check what's available on KU for middle grade/YA. I've heard the selection isn't as good, for some reason. But you can search by KU to see what's available.
KU isn't part of Prime, but there are some books you can get free to Kindle with Prime. I've done it but they make the process complicated and I don't remember all of the steps because using my library is just easier. That said, the selection of free Prime books isn't great, either.
ETA to answer your question, I don't actually have KU because when I looked a while back it wasn't a good enough selection compared to my library.
If you want to support more libraries you could check out the Free Library of Philadelphia's selection. For $50/year you can join as a non-resident and they have a much better elibrary then my local county one. I've been a member for a few years now and it's definitely worth the $50.

I got KU for free for a month or so when I got my kindle last year. I wasn't impressed with it and chose not to continue the subscription. Prime reading has limited options and many of them are the first in a series (I think they want you to buy the rest of the series so they give you the first one for free). I'm lucky enough to live in PA so the Free Library of Philadelphia is free for me. I second ssmjlm and would absolutely pay the out of state fee for their selection. Check out freelibrary.lib.overdrive.com and see if they have books your son would enjoy.
