Who has a plain old Kindle? The new ones are $59, and the Kindle Paperwhite is $99. It looks like the only difference is that the paperwhite has a built-in light, plus better screen resolution. I'm trying to decide if the extra $40 is worth it.
I dropped my 2.5 year old Kindle paperwhite. The screen has some lines on a top corner, and now the only thing the screen is responsive to is swiping to turn pages. So basically I can just keep reading the book I'm on.
I have a nook glow and want to switch to a kindle but the cost of the paperwhite is holding me back (especially since I don't want the special offers.) I just really like having the built in light. I probably use it with the light 75-90% of the time.
That wasn't very helpful, lol, but I do think overall the light is worth the extra 40 dollars.

I think the light is worth it as well. Keep checking Amazon for sales though. Around black Friday they were $79 or $89. Maybe They'll do another big sale before Christmas.
I went from a regular Kindle to a Paperwhite last year when my old Kindle final died. I will never ever go back. I don’t always need the light, but when I do, I want it.
I went from a Kindle to a Kindle Paperwhite a few years ago. I love the Paperwhite! The Paperwhite was originally supposed to be my husband's, but he didn't like how the Paperwhite fit in his hands. His fingers kept accidently turning the pages when he held it. I haven't had that problem.

I have the paper white. Never had a regular kindle but did have a nook with no light years ago. I need a light! I got lights to hook on my nook but they were annoying and not great. Having a light integrated is fabulous. Totally necessary and worth it for me.

I went from a nook glow to kindle paper white. I’m SO much happier as a kindle user. I had a lot of problems with the screen of the nook glow (multiple ones got tears) but haven’t had an issue with the paper white. I was a little hesitant to switch but I love my kindle more!
Also wanted to say I have the special offers version and it’s not intrusive. I really don’t notice it. It’s just when it’s on the screensaver mode. Totally worth it for the cheaper price.
luckystar2 mine has a tear in it as well. It really annoys me.
I just feel some strange loyalty to B&N now that everyone has abandoned them for amazon! I got the first generation nook as soon as it came out and then upgraded to the glow and I feel sad making the leap. LOL. I'll be over it in a few months though I'm sure.
Get the paper white! I upgraded from my perfectly fine and 100% working kindle touch to the paper white just for the light. It was a million percent worth it! I do tons of reading in bed, in the car and by a campfire. I used to use a book light with my touch and it caused a glare and I had a hard time getting it to stay in place.

Me too! My original nook was first generation and like right when it came out. I upgraded to glow when it first came out. It tore/got it replaced and my next one tore. Ugh! Then I tried getting the new glow and realized they screwed up the library lending. That’s when I threw in the towel. I need library lending and didn’t want to wait for them to figure it out. I was sad at first but B&N totally dropped the ball. They had library lending first and it was so inconvenient and they sold a product without fixing a problem first. Kindle library lending is SO easy!!! And I’ve had my paper white 2 years I think and no tears at all.
It's a toss up for me. I love the page buttons on the regular Kindle, but I enjoy the light far more than I expected to. The page buttons might not be too big of an issue for me if my cat didn't really get a kick out of stepping on my Kindle. It takes me awhile sometimes to find my spot. So that might be a me/cat specific issue, not a Kindle issue, lol.
Yeah, the light in the paperwhite is very much worth it for me. I read a lot in bed after my H has gone to sleep, but it's also great for reading in bright daylight. I also have the special offers and it doesn't bother me in the least, it's literally just a screensaver that I don't always see anyways since I use a cover.

I think the light is totally worth $40. I also started with an original Nook when it first came out and then got a nook simple touch with glow light when the original nook battery didn't last a day anymore. I switched to Kindle last year because of the library book borrowing issues, but went with the Voyage because I didn't want to give up the page turn buttons. I love my voyage! And I'm much happier with a Kindle than I was my nook. It just works. No bright spots on the screen, borrowing library books is just a click of a button and done.
