The dr we met with yesterday said he would do one. Is it as painful as the HSG? The HSG I had was SO painful - I get horrible cramps so I feel like I’m used to them and I honestly almost could not stand it. Luckily the x-ray process was very quick, maybe two minutes at most and then they removed the catheter. I was literally about to tell them I couldn’t handle it and then they were done.
But, if the saline sonogram is the same I’m really worried. I couldn’t stand that pain for more than a minute or two. This is giving me so much anxiety and nothing is even scheduled yet!
I had one done a few weeks ago. I did find it pretty painful, I'm sorry to say. But the pain was in waves (when the nurse kept squeezing the saline bag so the saline would go in...I almost stabbed her).
My IUI was worse but that's because I have a crooked ass cervix.
I have, and I don't recall it being even 10% as painful as my HSG. My HSG hurt SO badly. I remember the sono being uncomfortable, but it was no comparison fo rme.

I've had 3 saline sonos, 1 HSG, and a FemVue. For me, the saline sonos were nothing at all. The biggest discomfort was the speculum. There was no other pain/cramping, although my doctor warned me there might be. It also seemed like it was over fast, although each time they found scar tissue. The HSG produced sharp cramping, although it turned out I was allergic to the contrast, which might have made things worse.

My first couple of saline sonos were pretty uncomfortable, so for my third, I told the doctor I didn't like getting them because they were painful. He said he would be extra careful, and it didn't hurt at all. Luckily for the first two, the pain was only during the procedure and I felt fine after; it definitely was less painful than the HSG.
I had about 3 seconds of discomfort with my saline sono. My HSG was much more painful, which made me nervous for the saline sono but it ended up being so much easier!
I've never had an HSG, so I can't compare. But I've had a couple of the saline sonos. It's not fun, but I didn't think they were jump off the table painful either. I took 800 of ibuprofen beforehand for both.
Thanks all - this is very helpful to hear. Hopefully it won’t be as bad - I’ll just keep telling myself that! Maybe I will take the prescription meds for my menstrual cramps before. And a Xanax!

This exactly. The worst part for me was the speculum and catheter insertion. It wasn’t too much worse than an IUI, a lot more cramping but it was over pretty quickly.
I've had two and I've had two HSGs. The first one was awful, but that was mostly due to the doctor not being able to place the catheter easily. I was crying from the pain, and I'm not a crier when it comes to pain (really - I recently had a balloon literally ripped from my uterus after surgery to remove a septum and while I almost passed out, I didn't cry). But the procedure itself wasn't bad. The second one I had was done by an RE and I explained how bad it was previously and it was NBD at all.
Likewise, my first HSG was awful (it's possible the dye was irritating places that I had endometriosis removed a few months prior, according to the MD who did the HSG). The second one wasn't as bad, but I was still in a decent amount of pain during the procedure - it just didn't last all day like the first one. I'd easily put the saline sono as less painful than either HSG.
The unpredictability of how I'll feel afterwards drives me nuts, so I try to work from home those days if possible so I can curl into a ball on the couch if I need to. Also, typing this all out is making me feel really bad for my uterus and cervix!

Thank you for reminding me that I can talk to the doctor about my previous experiences. I don’t know why I don’t do that more often, or remember that it’s an option! I had a very painful IUI one month and when I mentioned it to the dr the next time (she picked up on how apprehensive I was) she made an extra effort to be gentle. I’ll make sure to say something when it’s time.
Same story for me, HSG was super painful, like the most intense cramp that kept getting worse and never stopped until it was all over (several minutes). Saline sono was like an IUI, a little bit of cramping afterwards that immediately ended when my uterus shot out that little bit of saline after I had sat up for a minute or two. It was actually kinda funny, I felt a tiny gush and the cramps were completely gone, very obvious cause and effect!
I don't remember my saline sono being too bad. I was super anxious about it though, and the doctor prescribed me something for the anxiety to take the morning of. I did need to bring someone else to drive though. When we start going through the testing for #2 I think I will skip the med to just drive myself home.
