Ugh. Thanks all. I'm currently researching how to install roof heat tape, but I'm not sure we'll be able to do it since it's so cold out right now. Ice dams are a curse we've dealt with every winter in this house. There's no way to add vents because of the old house and shape of it, so we're stuck.

twinmomma I hope you get your roof taken care of quickly! We get ice dams every year and I cross my fingers that the roof doesn't leak. Where did you get your roof rake? Does it usually help with the ice dams? I think that is what my neighbor across the street uses, but don't know. In the 6-years we've lived in our house I think he has acknowledged our presence maybe twice. I've also thought about a sock with ice melt, but don't trust my ability to get the sock up in the right place.
twinmomma, we had ice-damming a few years ago that caused damage to the interior walls in our master bedroom and kitchen. We filed a claim with our homeowner's insurance, which covered replacing the drywall and any other damage to the exterior wall, along with repainting both rooms. In addition, we replaced our gutter along the back of the house, which is where the damming occurred. We too were not able to add vents. Once we got the gutter angle correct, we haven't had any ice damming since. Our cause of the ice-damming was that the gutter was overflowing because it wasn't pitched right. You might want to make sure your gutter is not clogged and is taking water away from the roof edge (i.e. down a drain). Good luck!
greenmonkey1, We've had no luck with the sock thing. A couple years ago when it was really bad it seemed like the whole neighborhood tried and it didn't change anything for anyone. The roof rake does help, but you have to really keep up with it. We just got ours at Home Depot I think. Everyone sells them around here.
polecat8, Thanks! I don't think the damage is worth submitting a claim. The previous owner put a tiny addition on the front of the house, which made the roof angle weird. It's at that exact spot where the addition joins the house that we end up with a leak when we get an ice dam. It's like, smack dab in the center of our living room. This spring we're overhauling the entire roof and insulation, now that we have the money to actually do all the work.
I'm going to run a marathon this year. Not a New Years resolution kind of thing, it's something I've thought about daily since a half I did in october. While I have not signed up yet, I'm going to book the hotel tomorrow.
::breathing into a paper bag:
Cool!
Are you doing a local one?
I really want to do a full. It's officially on my bucket list. I did a half last year and am doing the same half this year in 2 weeks. Then I have a 10 mile trail run that I'm doing later in the month. I haven't figured out exactly when or which full I want to do though.

Good luck on the marathon training! I did a half marathon in May 2016, just before I got pregnant with DS2. I am thinking about a full, but the amount of training is a little too much for me right now. Maybe in another year or so!
twinmomma, when are you due for a new roof? We had to replace ours a couple of years ago, and they put a layer of copper under the shingles that is supposed to heat up in the sun and melt everything.
We had a problem with ice dams at our last house. Dh installed a heat trace cable - a zig zagged wire that went across the roof. He wired it to a switch in the house, so he wouldn't have to go out and plug it in when we needed it. Worked like a charm. Used a ton of electricity, so we used it sparingly, but having it on the switch made that easy to do.
So our whole plan of listing our house in February in order to move and have DD at a new school for the start of elementary?
Well....................... the enrollment period ends March 16. I have no idea how that plays out. I feel like we screwed ourselves over pretty good on this one.
This ice dam thing ... you Northerners are amazing. I’d die if I had to deal with winter weather, winter clothes, ice dams, snow blowing, freezing cars, etc. I’d die - I am serious.
DH did a wonderful job with the lasagna last night.
Got the mail this morning. DD and I had a envelope from FIL. He hasn't spoken or had any contact with either of us for 2 years. I got really nervous as the last time he did have contact with me it was extremely nasty. Had my girlfriend next door open it for me just in case. It was a grocery store gift card with a note saying he couldn't find any Christmas cards after Christmas but thought DD and I could use this together. I'm more confused than anything but will be polite and send a Thank you. I don't know if I will tell DH about it or not. Whenever we talk about his parents it turns into a big blow up and I don't want to deal with that.
I hope the polar vortex doesn't last long and all the snow and ice dams go away quick.
k3am, I would put in the enrollment for DD anyways. You know you will be moving to that district/school by August/September as your house will be listed and probably sold by the 3/16 deadline anyways.
Our open enrollment for school starts mid January and is due no later than 2/28. It was so hard looking at schools with a 4 1/2 year old who looked so tiny compared to the other kids at open K night.
k3am - is that for people who live there? We have a date in May, but if you move in you register at the school with a utility bill after they reopen in August before students return.
186momx, we wouldn't know what school to enroll her in because we have no idea where the house will be.
For example, I have 20 elementary schools within a 2.5 mile radius of our current house. And that's only counting the first page of google search results.

I don't know. I'm out of my depth here. Our realtor mentioned that if your school you're zoned for is full, even if it's filled by transfers, they'll put you at another school in the district at random. And then we'd have to reapply for enrollment at the nearby school the next year. And if we're going to do that, I'd rather just keep her in kinder at her current center, but we can't afford to move AND do that.
k3am, If it's public school, wouldn't you just go to the school district once you move and register at that point? I mean, what do people do if they move in part way through the school year? They actually just pick a random school in the district and send you there?
2chatter, if I had to deal with your summer heat on a regular basis, I would die. I'm cold all the time, but I can just keep piling clothes on. Three 90 degree days in a row and I'm ready to crawl into my chest freezer.

twinmomma, I hope the damage is minimal and doesn't get worse!
2chatter, sometimes I wonder why I live in a cold/snowy place (Michigan) too. But then I remember how much I don't like super-hot weather (anything over 90, I'd seriously melt if I had to live in that all the time), giant spiders and other large bugs, cockroaches, alligators (any lizards, really), and the thought of scorpions terrifies me, so I don't think I'd do too well down south, LOL.

That's what I had assumed. I'm not sure of any of this. From what the realtor said, they have to provide you with a school, but it doesn't have to be the closest to you. I thought he was just blowing smoke, but then someone else said something similar.
I think I’m just lazy y’all - mae0111 and covergirl82 - I couldn’t deal with the “more work” aspect of winter!
k3am - the timeline sounds super favorable for you guys then, as you will be moving sooner than later and hopefully that means schools won’t be full? Can you see the demographics online (capacity, current state enrollment, real estate sales anticipated in each zone) and use that to partly guide your search? I narrowed to two schools when we searched based largely on demographics. Our district had recently published a demographic study so that helped.

I really have no idea how this all works.
Wow that is not how it works here. Here they have to take you, there's is no "the school is full". As a matter of fact, if there is a transfer, the kid that is the transfer has to leave. If it's to capacity and a kid joins, they have to figure it out and make room. Maybe you can pick an elementary school that you actually like that has an apartment in the area and then she can go there, regardless of where your house ends up being? I know that's lots of money, especially if you end up finding a house but...it might be worth it.
2chatter, My thought process is always "We can just push the snow out of the way." I can't just push a tornado, earthquake, hurricane, etc... out of the way. So living up north and dealing with blizzards doesn't seem THAT bad in comparison! (Plus, I like skiing.)
We have such mild weather here in the PNW most of the time. If you can get over the endless rain and gray of winter. At least you guys are prepared for the snow and ice vs us who have 1 plow for the whole county which is bigger than RI. When we get an inch of snow the whole town shuts down until it melts LOL.
k3am, call and talk to the school and district anonymously. Do the my husband looks like he will be transferring to your area in June. My daughter will be going into K this fall what do I need to do to get her enrolled when we arrive. Schools here have to take you if you are zoned for that school if there is room or not. Which is why DD's class has had 40 kids at one point this year because the school can't say no you can't attend here because 1st grade is full her teacher just has to deal. Plus her class size changes weekly as kids move constantly here (low income school).
