I think I’m just lazy y’all - mae0111 and covergirl82 - I couldn’t deal with the “more work” aspect of winter!
k3am - the timeline sounds super favorable for you guys then, as you will be moving sooner than later and hopefully that means schools won’t be full? Can you see the demographics online (capacity, current state enrollment, real estate sales anticipated in each zone) and use that to partly guide your search? I narrowed to two schools when we searched based largely on demographics. Our district had recently published a demographic study so that helped.
Real estate here is... super crazy. But the good schools all seem to be lumped together in roughly the same areas. So the neighborhoods we're targeting all are well performing school.
But if that school is full and they send you to another school in the district - which could be just 3-4 miles away, you can end up in a significantly different school.
ETA: to be clear.. I have no idea how it works in actuality.
DH called the district today, but they were closed for the holidays. He'll try again Monday.

I was just saying that I don't know what's worse - the boots, snow pants, mittens, etc. thrown all over the place in the winter, or the wet towels and swimsuits thrown all over the place in the summer!
And I, too, am more OK with snow than I would be with tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, or wildfires. Oh, and the bugs... we simply do not have bugs like you do in the south. I'm the official bug killer of the family, and anything that could potentially fight back scares the crap out of me.
I'm really not excited for -5F without the wind chill tomorrow, but it's temporary. I don't ski, but I do really like having distinct seasons. And I like playing in the snow when it's not, like, -5F without the windchill.

k3am does it cost anything to enroll? If it doesn't I would consider enrolling at 2 or 3 that you would be okay with her attending. I realize this would occupy a spot for another student but I'm sure there's a waitlist that they will pull from when you know what schools she won't be attending.
k3am that overall sucks. I hope you find a house and get into the neighborhood school. One of the biggest public school appeals for us is walk k-8 and the community. Good luck!!
I think k3am has multiple schools in the district and "choice".
You can't register without proving residency so .... I think you need a new house or apartment ASAP if you want a specific school.
Yep, this is indeed the case. I've been told that the "choice" is incredibly limited.
We would actually take just about any of the schools in the neighborhoods we're looking at. But I would prefer that the one we end up at be the closest.
This ice dam thing ... you Northerners are amazing. I’d die if I had to deal with winter weather, winter clothes, ice dams, snow blowing, freezing cars, etc. I’d die - I am serious.
True story... When I was getting a promotion that required us to leave DC, I had two options. Option 1- back to Dallas. “No way, we love the East Coast. No interest in going back to Texas.” Boss grinned and said “Other option is Buffalo.” “Dallas, it is! You can die in the cold in Buffalo!” Boss laughed his ass off. And sent me back to Dallas.
mommyatty - Buffalo is a whole different universe. Lake effect snow is no joke. I'm a New Englander through and through, and I would definitely die in the cold in Buffalo.
I don't mind the snow until I have to get somewhere. I lived in Erie PA and Syracuse NY each for 4 years. You want snow? You got it! But the other times of year were awesome. I miss living in Syracuse in the Fall. It was always beautiful and fun to head to the Adirondacks for the day.
I'm going to run a marathon this year. Not a New Years resolution kind of thing, it's something I've thought about daily since a half I did in october. While I have not signed up yet, I'm going to book the hotel tomorrow.
::breathing into a paper bag:
Cool!
Are you doing a local one?
I really want to do a full. It's officially on my bucket list. I did a half last year and am doing the same half this year in 2 weeks. Then I have a 10 mile trail run that I'm doing later in the month. I haven't figured out exactly when or which full I want to do though.
I asked around, asked some questions at H&F, and sat down with a anothet working mom friend who has done 5 (4 after kids) and these are the things I was looking for in a marathon:
Good crowd support November since October can still be hot City setting Flat CIty as opposed to beach or country It came to Chicago or Richmond and Richmond it is!! I didn't end up booking the hotel today 😆
campermom - ummmm Richmond was so definitely not flat when I ran there last year. I can’t imagine a flat marathon course that’s flat - are you sure? Then again, My area is for real flat - maybe Richmond is comparatively flat for you?

How did I miss this, you've done Richmond!?
I guess I meant flat relative to Baltimore. When I did the half (3rd time) my Garmin said my elevation gain was 558 ft. The other half marathons I've done had gains of 318, 200, (those 2 were awesome) and...huh look at that, the last one says 668 feet. I thought that one was super flat but I think it was high bc of a bridge, but that was otherwise not too bad.
Everytime I do Baltimore I swear I won't again and I'm down for The count all day. I was so much better after I did the flat ones, I took the kids grocery shopping afterwards.
Do you happen to know what the gain was for Richmond? Tell me all the advice!!
I only ran in Richmond - the races were too early for me post wedding events - but it felt straight up and down to me. A friend who lives there showed me part of the course and it reminded me of San Francisco and I thought no way!
One recommendation is to run the pipe over the river for one of your training runs - it is gorgeous and unique!

Oh boy! Well, at this point my heart is set. I've heard it's flatter than bmore at least. My goal is to finish and my Next goal is sub 5. I think there will be room for walking if I need it! I hear it is a beautiful course!
