Does anyone have any suggestions for vacation destinations for an extended family trip in March?
ILs are talking about organizing a family trip someplace warm(ish). Probably 4-5 nights over a long weekend. It would be MIL and FIL, 2 BILs and maybe their serious gfs, us and the boys (1.5 and 3.5 then). We’re all in Chicago area and can get direct flights almost anywhere. Don’t want to tackle Disney yet.
ILs were initially talking Mexico or Caribbean, but we are TTC and the CDC still recommends against travel to all those places do to Zika.
ILs are mostly into golf, eating, and shopping. DH and I would prefer something a little more active.
We've been debating this one for months. We had settled on Nashville, Indianapolis, Louisville and other parts of Kentucky road trip and use hotel points.
But with our recent weekend in St. Louis and staying at a hotel while the heat was out, we are out of hotel points.
We usually do Sarasota/Siesta Key. I could also be talked into the West side of Florida and do the Kennedy Space Center. House rentals at least in Sarasota are slim pickings now because it's so late in the season, and we like to get a pool for the kids.
We've done Hilton Head and Savannah. Nice but we wanted something different. Most rentals seem to be in resort type condos maybe.
So we settled on San Diego. House pickings again are a bit on the slim side now, but we found a townhouse with a communal pool and just booked it. And are using airline points for the flights.

Florida sounds like it would have something for everyone. I also love the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area in Alabama. Hilton Head is on my list of places I'd like to go.
waverly - share your SD rental research! We are planning on that for summer....
I just looked on VRBO. I filtered by pool but sometimes I wonder about the filters if they always have a pool. And made sure the price was in the low $200 per night and at least 3 bedroom. Not sure if this place will work out, but it seemed nice online.

Phoenix? Definitely has golf. Not sure about other active stuff or shopping, the one time I went there I pretty much just sat by the pool and enjoyed the sun.
I was going to suggest AZ (spring training, Grand Canyon, zoos, hikes) plus all the snow birds should be heading home by the end of March so not as busy. Vegas could be fun. From what I've heard from clients there is something for everyone including little kids. Plus you could do some day trips from Vegas to Death Valley, Hoover Dame, etc.
Thanks, everyone. I don’t really come from a family that was into vacations in the south, so I have very little knowledge of what to actually do in places like Florida. But good to know there are lots of suggestions worth checking out!
We've had fun extended family vacations in Austin, TX and also in Nashville (stayed in Franklin). I really hate flying with any kid between ages 1 and 2, so I'd try somewhere with a short flight.
