Since my sales season is still in the very early stages, I have free time to get some apps filled out and my resume ready to go if/when I am ready to apply for openings anywhere. Currently filling out the app for the school corp and I'm stuck at the employment history. Here is the quick and dirty history...
Current position is agent/president for last 7 years. No supervisor. Next, administrative assistant for 3 years. Supervisor was my dad, which complicates things since he is deceased. Next, worked at a popular women's undergarment store for 3 months in college, quit without notice since I was working for my dad making good money with a bright future. I don't even remember who my supervisors were because it was 9 years ago and so short lived. Next, drive-in style restaurant/ice cream shop for 2 seasons. Supervisor was... The Asshole, which complicates things because he is an asshole.
1. Do I list my current position and the one where I worked for my dad? How bad does it look if the only jobs I've listed have been for myself or my dad? Do I list my job working for the Asshole and hope he does the mature thing and not sabotage any chance I have? 2. References - Would it look weird to list my accountant and my attorney as professional references? I have a company rep that I think would let me use him as a reference, which gives me 3. I also have a client that is a good family friend who I think would let me use him as well.
Also, I love you guys. If I could send each of you a box of cookies I absolutely would. If you want to test that theory, send me your address
Only do jobs you’ve had as an adult. So I would say working for your dad and yourself. And yes, your business references are appropriate. You’ll want to list them just to prove you had a real job and aren’t fudging as resume filler. Being in a smaller community is going to help you there. People know you and your family. It’s eash for people to verify your company exists.
Agree with mommyatty. And remember to apply like a man! Emphasize your skills and include things you have been exposed to and don’t worry for a second about the things you don’t meet on the list for the position. Good luck!!
And cookies are the opposite of the direction I need to go —- I downed multiple bowls of pozole last night and had mush and fried bread - I need to just stop eating.
But to chime in.. KEEP THE ASSHOLE OUT OF YOUR JOB PROSPECTS. He will sabotage you, even if it's just inadvertently. I have 100% confidence in this fact.
Completely agree with k3am , leave the Asshole out of all of this. I would only list the adult jobs that are in your relevant field, the only reason to list college jobs is because someone is right out of school or it contributes greatly to the narrative, like it was an internship in their field.

I was hoping the advice would be to leave him out of it completely. I was concerned about the lack of history and the fact that I've been my own boss for 7 years and I'm only 28.

Agree completely with advice everyone has given you. Be proud of the fact that you have been your own boss for 7 years and are only 28! That is an amazing accomplishment!

Thanks. It's hard to look past the fact that the agency is only about 1/3 of the size it was when my dad died and focus on the fact that it's still up and running almost 8 years later, which is probably about 7 years longer than those who told me I couldn't do it expected.
Oh, you probably already know this, but put in your resume or on applications that you sold the company to a larger company. That shows you maintained something of value for the better part of a decade.

erinshelley21 you have done an amazing thing - taking on this role at a young age and keeping the business afloat for several years. you need to brag away!
