I feel like I’m basically copying krystee ’s post from a few weeks ago! I realized yesterday that this is the last long weekend for a while and we have no plans, so hey let’s try potty training! I read the 3 day book like 6 months ago. DD has been peeing on the potty at school and every night before bath for the last few weeks. I think she will learn fast if she wants to. If not, she’s so stubborn I’m not sure it will be worth a fight, but I’m hoping she cooperates. Any advice? I’m kind of winging it! I’m planning for bottomless tomorrow and will keep the little potty nearby. I’m mostly worried about poop. I have no idea what she will do and I really don’t want to clean poop off the floor! That’s why I want to do it when H is home for 3 days to help.
Anyone else trying this weekend?
I already made made the mistake of telling my sister. Her kids are older and I guess the 3 day method wasn’t a thing 8 years ago so she’s being super skeptical and judgemental about it.
I keep feeling like we should be, but there's always a reason why we aren't. Christmas was too crazy. New years, we had friends visiting. MLK weekend, I'm traveling so Calvin is going to be solo parenting. President's Day weekend, we're usually traveling for my dad's birthday.
I don't know when tf we're actually going to do it. Hobbes keeps vacillating between me thinking she's ready and thinking she's COMPLETELY NOT READY. Last night she peed on the floor right after she got out of the tub. Sigh. At least it was just on tile.
Susie , I know what you mean! DD does the same. I was going to potty train in the fall and then chickened out. She seems much more ready now. I’m keeping my expectations low! A lot of kids in her class her age and younger have PT already though so I’m hoping she’s ready.
BB is just shy of 2 and for a while she was asking about the potty all the time, but I think it was daycare peer pressure. Now that the she is the older kid in the class and the others have moved out, the pressure is gone. I think I will wait until the spring, that way she has some more time and perhaps better communication skills as well.
I’m going to try to February but idk if he’s ready. We have a couple trips planned in the spring where him bring PTed would be so nice so I’m going to try. He will turn 2.5 in a couple weeks.
So anyone know what method to use on a just turned 2.5 year old boy? He’s stubborn but loves him some M&Ms

I'm not but I'm interested to know how it goes for you since they are close in age and L is similarly stubborn, especially with potty stuff. I kind of want to just wait until she's "ready" as many tell me will happen, but I'm starting to feel like she's one of the last in her class to not be trained.
I do have a long weekend, but hadn't even thought about it because her daycare is open so I was going to send her. Maybe I'll give it a shot and if she's cooperating I'll keep her home Monday.
I’m going to try PTing next weekend (or maybe start on Thursday, depending on if she’s sleeping fine) so I’ll just be hoping to learn from you, haha
Now that I see this, I am wondering if I should rethink our plan for BB. But then again you have baby Roo2 on the way and will have your hands full, so I can see why you want to get things moving.
We just did the 3-day method over the New years weekend with our DD. She is 25 months. It went really well with her and she had never actually gone on the potty. She had a couple of pee accidents on Sat morning and figured out to tell us pretty quickly after that. She liked the undies and the treats and rewards.
#2 has been slower to figure out because they don't go as often. She only ended up going one time during the weekend, and we did get her to the potty but not right on time. We are still working on this and making sure she tells us soon enough. Her issue is she says she has to go, but doesn't want to sit on the potty long enough to go. So keeping her patient and on the potty until she goes is what we are working on. She then also got a virus this week and her system is all messed up, poor thing. But anyway, I think this will click soon enough. My recommendation is even if your DD starts going in her undies, get her to the potty to finish. I think it's a little scary for them, so try to make this happen where they go on the potty at least a little.
We are still using a pull up at night. I don't want to withhold liquids or get up at night with her (bad mom). We call them her nighttime or princess undies (they have princesses on them). She still wants to potty when she gets up and is kind of upset when they are wet, so I don't think she is seeing them as a diaper.
ETA: My DH's mom couldn't believe we were training this early and trying to do it in 3 days. But I had so many friends who had used this method and done it around this age and thought DD was ready.
I also want to add that DD had a couple of accidents day 1 back in daycare. We expected that and had sent lots of clothes and notes about how we were working with her for the teachers to read, and they appreciate that we were passing out the "method" so we were all on the same page. But to go from 2 parents and 1 child to 1 teacher and 4-6 kids, you can understand that it's a learning process at daycare as well. She was fine by the end of her first week and the teachers all really happy about the quick process rather than using a method that is more drawn out.
Good luck, I hope it goes well! We did the 3 day method over Labor Day weekend. I think the key was to really watch them for signs they were about to go or to catch them immediately when they started to go. By mid-morning of the first day they were both starting to figure out the feeling of when they had to go, it was just a matter of teaching them to go sit on the potty in time!
midwest07 , vtdiamond , so do you do underwear on Day 1 or no bottoms? I think when I read Oh Crap it said nothing on Days 1 and maybe 2, I forget. But then what if she poops on the floor! 😵 Curious as the book I’m reading now (thx pugz) says to use underwear which surprised me.
i also just realized I probably need to buy a travel seat. We have the Baby Bjorn seat for home. Do I need a ring for the home toilet too? Any recs?

We followed the Oh Crap method so were bottom free for the first day and a half or so. We tried underwear the afternoon of the second day. I don't think we had a poop on the floor, they both had an easy enough sign of when they needed to go that it was easy to spot and get them on the potty.
We used the little potties while we were training, and then moved to the big potty after a week or so. On the big potties we have a baby bjorn ring for the downstairs one and then a seat with a built in ring for the upstairs one. In the car I have the OXO travel potty that can be used as either a little potty or as a ring on a big potty.

We used some method called 3 day potty training that came from an "e-book" passed on to us. I am not sure quite how it varies from Oh Crap. But we started undies on morning of Day 1 and no pants. DD definitely felt the undies get wet, and I think the point of no pants is so the parent can see what's happening. We put towels on furniture and had stuff to clean up carpets and hardwood as needed.
We have both a little potty on the floor and a ring seat on a regular toilet with a stool so she can get to it. She uses both just fine. The little potty may have been most helpful at first so she could really see that she had gone potty. It is also of course messier since you have to clean it.
A big part of this e-book was to empower the child as being a big kid. You are big now and wear undies! They tell you when they have to potty, you don't take them to the potty, just remind them over and over to tell you when they have to go. It may be the book you have already.
vtdiamond , thx! I ordered the Oxo travel potty! That’s perfect.
midwest07 , yes, I have the same book! Now I can’t decide if I want to start with undies or not. Oh well, I’ll let H decide tomorrow!
I’m not going to lie, this is giving me so much anxiety. I’ve been thinking about potty training since she turned two, but have been too afraid to try. I really hope it goes smoothly. I half expect myself to chcken out again but H is on board, so I think we need to just go for it!
Wow, well things are going well so far! She just pooped in the potty pretty much all by herself! I was so shocked, I wasn’t expecting that! We’ve also had one pee already where she told H she had to pee and then peed the second time we sat her down. I hope the early success continues! She wasn’t happy at first this morning when we told her it was no more diaper day but got over it pretty fast. We’re doing naked so far and she loves being naked so that helped!

i think our daughters are similar in age and mine has ZERO interest... like none. I don't want to push it either lol.

starburst604, cheeseandcrackers, as someone with a late trainer (DD was 4 before she FINALLY decided to try after so much angst and planning and trying on my part), I will say that waiting until she was ready was really just the only way she would do it. Once she decided she was ready, she just did it. No accidents.
Day 1 update (in case anyone cares!): I think she did great! No full accidents, just a few dribbles and we were able to get her to finish on the potty each time. (Plus one giant poop!) She was naked for the first few hours but then she wanted underwear so we went with it. She would not go when we asked her to, it pretty much had to be her idea when she needed to go, which wasn’t very frequent even with extra fluids. She only peed 7x total today! So like every 2 hours. We couldn’t get her to go before bath, which was a bummer since that’s the time she’s been going every day for the past 2 weeks which is why we decided to potty train her. We put her in a diaper overnight. We will see how tomorrow goes!
But man, this is exhausting. We stayed home all day and between entertaining her and watching her all day, it was so draining. I’m not really sure how to make this work if we want to go out since I doubt we can get her to pee before we leave by asking. And I *need* to get out of the house tomorrow. Someone tell me it gets easier...
ETA: the other weird thing was that she woke up from her nap crying hysterically and it took a long time to calm her down. That was frustrating and sad. She’s had episodes like that when she was younger, but not for like 6-8 months. I hope that was an isolated incident and not related to potty training, although I’m afraid it is a stress response or something. Poor kiddo.
noodleoo glad to hear day 1 went well! I hear you on going stir crazy, I hated being cooped up inside.
My dD was similar to yours, didn’t want to go when we asked her to. She was also scared to use public potties (still is a bit) so we used the travel potty in the beginning. I would try a short trip out and see how it goes. My DD was a camel, she could hold it for a few hours no problem.
vtdiamond , we’re having mixed results today and I could use some advice. DD is a total camel and she won’t go until she has to. Extra fluids isn’t working, she only seems to go every 2 hours. The first time today she totally went all by herself, it was great! I kind of thought we were home free. Then 2 hrs later I wasn’t paying attention and she had her first total accident. she didn’t say anything, just peed on the floor. Sigh. I don’t know what to do. I’m afraid to go out since I don’t think I can make her pee before we leave. I’m getting discouraged because I feel like we aren’t having enough opportunities to teach her to go on the potty. She goes back to daycare on Tuesday and the head teacher is kind of a skeptic, I know if DD has a full accident they will probably put her back in diapers.
Also, being stuck at home is awful and H and are frustrating and taking it out on each other. I’m thinking maybe this was a mistake. Any advice or words of support?
noodleoo. What Oh Crap recommends is trying your first outing right after they go potty so you have a bit of time. I would wait for her to go on her own and then leave immediately for an errand. Then try the potty at wherever you go or the travel potty in the car. For accidents I really tried to emphasize that they needed to go in the potty and tried not to say “it’s ok.”
For daycare, our center was super supportive and told us to bring as many backup outfits as possible. They kept changing them until they ran out of spare clothes and only at that point did they put them in a pull up. But I’ll be honest we still have an accident or two a week (4 months in) - sometimes they just forget and other times another kid is already in the bathroom.
My philosophy is that accidents will happen, you just need to keep going and as long as they go in the potty more then have accidents I think you’re doing ok.
Thx, vtdiamond, I really appreciate the advice/support. I had a talk with H and I feel a little better. We're committed to not going back and she really has been doing well. I wish I had a copy of Oh Crap! I read it months ago and unfortunately it is currently checked out of the library. I think we will try an outing either after nap today or tomorrow morning right after she goes, like you suggested. She's so sensitive though, I doubt she will go on a public potty for a while. I got the travel potty today but honestly I might just put the potty chair in our trunk since she's used to that!
We'll push through it and hopefully daycare will follow our plan.

noodleoo I have an older copy of the ebook (pdf) I could email you. I’m reading it this week and following along! DD is almost 19 months so according to Oh Crap! It’s a little early for us to start... with the baby due in 4 weeks I’m thinking maybe we’ll give it a try about 6 weeks after that depending on how things are going with the adjustment to the new baby.
Raggedeannie , that would be awesome, thx! I’ll PM you my email!
milsaroo , DD has gone through about 8 pairs in the last 2 days! Even when she makes it to the potty, she sometimes dribbles a bit. I think I have 12 pairs and I might pick up some more today so that I have enough for daycare without having to do laundry midweek.
Yesterday ended up going pretty well! She only had the one pee accident in the morning. Other than that, she peed and even had another poop in the potty! We’re still doing diapers for nap and night. So far today, she peed in the diaper this morning and she hasn’t peed yet... it has been 2.5 hrs since wake up. 😳 I’m surprised at how long she can hold it and she refuses to try. She seems to wait until the last minute when she really has to go. But then she tells us and will go to the potty. She definitely understands the idea! It is so stressful for us though because we’re afraid an accident is imminent any minute. And we still haven’t left the house. So mixed success?
Potty training graduates ( vtdiamond ,midwest07 ),how often do your kids pee now? And poop? How do you get them to pee when you need them to, like before going someplace?
noodleoo, my DD will go about that long 2-2.5 hrs between peeing. My son goes like every hour though. They poop only once a day though. The book said that was normal for them to “consolidate poops” when potty training.
I haven’t had much luck getting them to go potty before going out. It’s typically a battle so I haven’t pushed it as they’re good about telling me when they have to go and I have the travel potty in the car.
noodleoo, my DD can go a few hours between pees. She has also been sick and not wanting to drink as much and I think they kind of start to recognize that eating/drinking means they have to take a break and go potty. But she can definitely go a few hours holding it, which I think is normal.
She has never been one to go #2 everyday, but I do think that's also normal to go less and go more at a time.
We don't have much luck getting her just to try before we go places, she only wants to go if she has to go then. We haven't had any long drives yet though and it's worked out ok. The only thing that kind of helps is a treat, but not always.
noodleoovtdiamond what underwear did you buy for your girls? BB is small for her age, and is maybe 24 pounds and 32 inches and no where near being in size 2T which is what I have seen for underwear at either Carters or Target. Any other suggestions for ones that run small?
I would get at least 10. I picked up 2 packages for each kid at target when we started.
I think I ended up getting 25! Then I can leave plenty at daycare, some in her backpack, a bunch at home, and not have to do a lot of laundry. As mentioned below, we have "dribble" incidents which require changes even if not full accidents.

I have a bunch from Gymboree in size XXS, which is 2T I believe. DD is tall but skinny and they fit well. But she is also in their 2T pants. I really like them and I’d recommend them! I also bought some cheap Fruit of the Loom ones and they are a much rougher fabric. I think I’m juts going to use those as backup for daycare and the car/diaper bag.
I just realized I need to start buying 2 piece pajamas! She’s still in zip up one pieces, fleece for winter. What brands do people like?
