I think there is little chance Indy gets selected, but it does have an old GM plant right downtown (walking distance) available. Super close to the airport, too. I’m not sure how much they’d need public transit then.
I wonder about housing prices around that area. I'm not super familiar as we've only ever looked at more north/northwest areas. I know 465 can be nuts around that side at times but maybe there's a way to adjust starting times so amazon traffic isn't just adding to an already existing mess.

That would put it close to Louisville which has a lot of big warehouse businesses and also a large UPS location I believe.
I’d say dc if they opened in ward 8 but it’s in ward 6 so I’m definitely not sold.
The mayor's pitch was something like RFK and something else across the river so those wards would be affected.
My school families would really benefit if this was in ward 8. They are begging for jobs and development. I know there is the worry for displacement though but the job opportunities would be amazing.
Fuuuuuuuck, Dallas made the list. We might be ok if they end up downtown or in the Irving area but if they decide to go up north with the other major campuses it's going to be a shitshow. That area has gotten so congested and housing prices have shot up so much with Toyota and all the insurance offices relocating here that adding one more headquarter will be a giant clusterfuck.

Well I think the fact that Indy has low housing prices, good commutes, and a prime downtown location mean that it’s probably not a very desirable place. I guess if they are looking to come in and be the BIG thing in an area it could be it, but they could want to join an already vibrant area which isn’t Indy.
Do we really think public transportation will be a major factor? Tech bros tend to lean libertarian and hate public transit - see what has happened with Google and other tech companies in the Bay Area and private transit for employees.
I don't. We have a shitton of companies here an piss poor public transit. Also regarding the traffic here in Atlanta. If they pick a location on the South-side, like Porsche did, the traffic will be fine.

OR they could go into the City. There are all those railroads in the City and the City is also very close to the airport. I am selfish and don't care about the traffic because I lie in the city and work on the Southside.
My guess is ATL but I wouldn’t doubt somewhere like Indy or Nashville. Proximity to Louisville and the UPS bonanza that is there may be a draw. Both areas between the cities and Louisville are not much and are basically interstate (sorry Indiana and Kentucky).
I think something like that might be good for a state like Indiana or TN. Drawing more people in who aren’t born and bred from the area would be nice.

I don't think Amazon has reached its peak yet. I think they are making the shopping part irrelevant. They have their own production company now (producing music and TV). They opened a restaurant delivery service. They are going to continue to add more and more parts to their business that have nothing to do with shopping for products.

They're constructing a huge warehouse in my borough and I think that would be a stupid move if they are going to prioritize everything else but shopping. I guess they could eventually repurpose the warehouse and others they may be constructing elsewhere for something else...but repurpose it to what?

Yep. It's not a coincidence that the expected average annual salary for the employees at the new headquarters will be over $100k. They're not looking for people to stuff boxes or provide e-commerce customer support.
If they choose Toronto would the rest of the company follow suit with benefits or only the Canadian employees?

I agree with this and actually think Indy would be a good location. I was just thinking the other day about when that city will really boom and become a nightmare. H's relatives complain about the traffic, but it's incredibly reasonable. They have a thriving downtown and have really grown a lot in the last several years.
As a lifelong resident of this city... 40 wonderful years, I say this with the most love and respect I can muster:
DO NOT COME TO AUSTIN, AMAZON! Honestly, we're a congested city that can't handle the number of people we have coming here daily. We're over populated. We have a shitty infrastructure to handle more traffic. We have no public transportation to really speak of (and no where to build it.) Our housing market is artificially inflated because of all the demand but wages are stagnant. We're suffering from serious gentrification in our historically Black and Latino parts of town because of real estate speculators who are buying up the areas on the east side of downtown.

I'm not sure I want Amazon.. but Nashville could use some diversity of industry beyond health care and Amazon already has a bunch of distribution centers here. Nashville is close to Fedex (Memphis) and Louisville (UPS).
I really think Nashville and Indy are the sleepers here and either would make a good choice for a host of reasons.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I think Amazon's time will be up soon enough. Not because I'll probably cancel my Prime membership soon because I'm no longer getting anything out of it while other companies are upping their game, but because they've jumped the shark in terms of the shopping experience. Eventually a lot more people are going to be annoyed by the cheap (in price and in quality) stuff that pops up all over the search results.
I mean, I guess they can just buy a lot more companies like they did with WaPo and Whole Foods and still be successful but who knows.
I tend to agree. Amazon has forced other companies to have better customer service (Target had free shipping in December, Gap has free returns) which is a good thing and why I've never felt the need to join Prime.
Target's website is complete trash though. It's infuriating.
But I am also pro-Prime. I've never had an issue with price or quality and my items showing up in 2 days is like magic.
