What are you reading this long weekend? Are you enjoying it? Is it keeping you out of the oppressive heat? Or if you're not celebrating Australia Day...are you staying warm this regular weekend?
QOTW: If you could cast the movie adaptation of your favorite book, who would you put in the lead roles?
I had a good reading week! I finished Americanah and read We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (5 stars to both) and then read a Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle.
I started "A Dance of Dragons" - a YA series that I bought on amazon on super sale a year ago. So I read the first novella in that - The golden Cage - and am now reading the Shadow Soul. So far it's okay. I figure I'll probably finish this book and then go on to other things for a while. I don't think its going to suck me like some other YA series do lol.
I finished The Good Girl earlier this week. It was fast paced and kept me hooked the whole time. Now I'm reading The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. So far, so good.
Read: Pachinko by Min Jin Lee - historical fiction; 3 stars; This book was sooo depressing! Almost nothing 'good' happens in it which is hard when reading a 500+ page book full of sadness that does not even leave you feeling "I've now grown from reading this" like some sad books can do A Lady's Code of Misconduct by Meredith Duran - historical romance; 3.5 stars; The amnesia plot was really great but unfortunately the other half of the plot was boring as hell
Total so far for the year: 10
Currently Reading: Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk by Kathleen Rooney - fiction; Good, but I am taking my time reading this by listening to the audiobook in little bits which actually works really well with how this story is being told, in little snippets of her past at a time All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque - classic; I would have had no idea this book was written in 1929! It reads very modern considering that, and I'm surprisingly enjoying this.

I read Blood Fury (BDB Legacy #3) 5* I really enjoyed it. I can't say why without spoiling it but I'm a sucker for what happened in this book. This is also by far the best book since The King. These plots have been really boring or too out of character lately.
We Should All Be Feminists 5*
I'm currently reading Turtles All The Way Down. I'm not loving the MC. Something about the way her mental illness is written is bothering me.

I'm slowly chipping away at The Light Between Oceans. So far pretty good but so heavy you have to take breaks.
QOTW: Hmm, a lot of the books I've read have been made into movies. I enjoyed "Since You've Been Gone" I could see that being made into a movie. Not sure who I'd cast as the lead as I'm not up on all the young female actors anymore. Probably a shy brunette.

Read: Mean Streak- Sandra Brown 2* We Were The Lucky Ones- Georgia Hunter 4* You Will Know Me- Megan Abbott 3* When They Call You a Terrorist A Black Lives Matter Memoir- Patrisse Kahn-Cullors 5*
Total for the year: 12 Books
Currently Reading: Columbine- Dave Cullen Very tough read. I was very young when Columbine happened so it's quite eye opening how many things I've read so far that have contradicted much of what I grew up hearing.
I actually just finished reading Srillhouse Lake and it's not a favorite but I think is would be an interesting movie. I'm really bad at placing actresses for a role. I could see Sandra Bullock playing the lead role though.
This week I read Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesym Ward and Killers of the Flower Moon - The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann. I think 4 stars for both, though I’m beginning to think I’m too generous with stars since some of you have panned these and other of my recent reads! 😛
This weekend I’m planning to read the book club pick, a fresh hold from the library, and I’ll try to keep plugging away at a few others.

I finished a reread of The Raven King this week, the last book in the Raven Cycle. I love that series.
Dan Brown's Origin came off hold from the library this week so I've started that. I've also started a reread of Sorcerer's Stone.
I don't have an audiobook going right now. For some reason I'm in an audiobook slump and have just been listening to podcasts. The audio of A Man Called Ove just came available though so I'll try to start that in the next few days.
I’m reading The Department of Lost and Found and Listening to Heads in Beds. Enjoying both so far. I finished a quick Kristen Higgins earlier this week.

I'm still reading Imperial Requiem. I haven't made ANY progress on it. I have been too sick with the flu/upper respiratory infection/allergy attack/whatever for a week to read. It's really making me sad that I couldn't concentrate enough to read even a Kindle Freebie over the past week.
QOTW: Right now the series I read that has not been optioned (at least to my knowledge) is the Captain Lacey books by Ashley Gardner. I would love to see them well made, but I doubt that would happen, especially with the people I see in the roles in my head. Captain Lacey —Robert Sean Leonard Lady Donata — Kathleen Turner Grenville — Stephen Magnan Matthias/Bartholomew — Hugh Bonneville Marianne — Elizabeth Berkley Denis — James Caan Brewster — Forrest Whitaker
Also wanted to say Australia was super fun. Beautiful places and really nice people. I know you're not originally Aussie but was reminded when you mentioned Australia day.

Oh thank you. I am glad you had a good time. And I agree the people are friendly and nice and helpful. There are a lot of things different than in the US, and I spend a good bit of time complaining about the differences, but overall it's been a great experience for me and right now, I can't imagine coming back to live in the US and fitting in there, as much as I love spending time with friends and family in the US.
I’m reading Everything Here is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee. I wasn’t sure about it at first but now I can’t put it down.
QOTW: I want a Harry Potter miniseries that doesn’t leave out anything in any of the books. I think the actors should all be unknowns, though. (Netflix, I think this is your next project...)
I finally finished The Fifth Season. It turned out great. My only pet peave was that it ended at 90% on my kindle. It was full excerpts and appendixes. It drives me crazy!
I’m not reading Scythe by Neal Shusterman. It’s interesting and I’m plodding along pretty quickly!
I finished The Sympathizer, and even though I was iffy on it, I waited until after my book club discussion this morning to rate and review and ended up giving it 3 stars. Back to The Fireman I go! Although I also need to start Moral Combat: How Sex Divided American Christians and Fractured American Politics, because it's a real physical book that I need to get back to the library in 2 weeks because it's not renewable.
I'm laughing at the idea of it being oppressively hot, even though I know you are in an entirely different hemisphere. It's cold, pouring rain, and super windy right now where I am.
Does calling and managing to not scream obscenities at Qantas customer support over them screwing us over on our flight count as celebrating Australia Day?
QOTW: I really have no idea. I'd LOVE to see an adaptation of The Eyes of the Dragon as an HBO miniseries, but I don't know who I'd cast.

I just finished The Madonnas of Leningrad. Sooo good (5 stars). I’m amazed the author was able to write it before stepping foot in Leningrad or the Hermitage. She did a fantastic job. The ending is heartbreaking.
I picked up The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin for my next read. It has a very interesting premise: if a fortune teller predicted the date you were going to die, would it affect the way you live your life?
This week I finished: The Scribe of Siena 4* And Every Morning the Way Home gets Longer and Longer 3 1/2* The Keeper of Lost Things 4* We Should All Be Feminists 5*
Brings me to 9 books for the year, though two this week were incredibly short.
I am currently reading: A Gentleman in Moscow History Decoded: The 10 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time This is the Story of a Happy Marriage (audiobook)
Man, you guys are great readers! I thought I kept a brisk pace, but that's nothing compared to you all.
I am reading Why We Sleep, which is full of fascinating facts. And un-fun ones about how bad alcohol and coffee are for sleep.
Last week I read New People by Danzy Senna. The character was super-relatable even though she did bizarre things. Which reminds me of a line from a fantastic short story I just read in the New Yorker and highly recommend, "Writing Teacher."

I'm nearly finished with The Bookshop Book by Jen Campbell. She's the author of Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops. I like it for the most part, but I swear they skipped the editing portion of publication. I find grammatical errors all over this book and even occasional misspellings. I find that very irritating. I'll be glad to be done with this book, though. It's draggin on a bit long. 35 pages left I think.
QOTW: Most of my favorite books already have film or tv adaptations either in progress (A Discovery of Witches) or already done (GOT, HP).
