I'll be there for 2 weeks next July and don't know much about it. Going through a fellowship so will be working but also will have some free time. Any info people have about things to do, getting around, etc would be appreciated! I'll be stationed in or around Montevideo.

I’ve been. Took the ferry from BsAs to Colonia and stayed for several nights at a terrific property an hour outside, the Four Seasons Carmelo. Took polo lessons, cooking class, etc. Did a day touring the wineries around the area (which are fantastic and, at least when I was there, very undiscovered). Also spent some time in Colonia. Can’t advise specifically on Montevideo or on getting around but if you are looking for a way to unwind post-fellowship, I highly recommend Carmelo. If you do go, have dinner at Finca Narbona, a great little farm with about 4 tables.

Montevideo is a cute city that probably takes about 3 days to "do." Unfortunately you'll be there in winter, otherwise I'd suggest checking out Punta del Este - I think most of the beach towns clear out during winter, so it might not be worth the visit. Colonia is fun though, and I would consider going to Buenos Aires for a couple days if you have the time. Flights should be pretty cheap, or there's the BuqueBus if you have time for a boat.
