DS (2) had a cough on Monday. Developed a fever, picked up midday at D.C. Went downhill fast. Worried about breathing Monday night but kept him in our bed and we all barely slept.
Tuesday went to the dr, tested positive for flu. Last fever reducer was tues at 3:30 pm. Hasn't had a fever since. Began tamiflu that afternoon. Chest X-rays were clear. I asked the dr what to expect with the fever and how long he would be out and he said "oh he will be out all week. You can expect he fever to last days."
But Wednesday and Thursday were fever free. He's angry, but his baseline is also grump, so...he's extra grumpy.
Friday-keep him home again? Send in?
ETA I feel like we should keep him home bc...it's the flu and kids can die from this. But when would he stop being contagious if he has already passed the fever free for 24 hours by Wednesday?
If you can do it, I’d keep him home one more day. I always err on the side of caution with fevers, and this flu is no joke.
DD1 has what I believe was flu in December. Hit her hard Mon, could not get out of bed Tues, Wed, up a bit Thurs. Seemed to be 100% better on Fri, but I kept her home. I figured her immune system was down after all that work, and I didn’t want her to get even sicker.
Sniffles - off they go. But one more day might turn out to be just what he needs.
If it was the flu, and you can swing it, I'd stay home tomorrow. I'm a huge worry wart. One more day recouping couldn't hurt. I remember when I had the flu a few years ago and felt better and tried to jump back in to normal activities. I hit a wall around lunch. It takes a while to totally bounce back.
DD1 had the flu and missed 5 days of school. Her fever broke after 72 hours but then all she wanted to do was sleep. Day 6 she put herself to bed at 5:30pm. (She's 4)
I am going to keep him home. You know when you are on the fence.....then all the benefits of taking a sick day for a semi-sick kid are on my mind and there's no going back now!
Sleeping in. Starbucks. Head start on weekend chores. Maybe a run on the treadmill during nap. More RHONY.
I’d keep him home - strep and flu this year both commonly lack fever - more so than I have ever seen - so my new measure is my kid seems to be at 90 percent.
Our three year old had pretty much the exact same pattern with her fever starting Monday night. She went to the doctor and got Tamiflu on Wed. She hasn't had a fever since Wednesday afternoon and has handled this pretty well. She hasn't been down and out, still her happy, active self. Doctor told us we could send her after 24 hours fever free so she went to daycare today. He also said that it may have a shorter life span because she got the flu shot. Daycare has been fully aware as this is their second case of influenza in her room this week. I'm still worried about today though.
