DS, 1st grade, is at his first sleepover. He and the other boy both love Star Wars, but DS has only seen the 3 original movies. And that's the most intense thing he's EVER seen. So she asked me if they could watch "Rogue One." I said okay, but came home, Googled, freaked out, and texted her that I had some concerns after reading more and could they find another movie? Which they are doing. But of course now I feel dorky and uncool, but also kind of annoyed that they didn't choose something tamer. Am I crazy? Have all the kids seen Rogue One? I'm online reading reviews about it being really dark and lots of difficult concepts re: sacrifice of war.
My first grader has not. He would not be comfortable with it. He is easily spooked with movies and carries the stress of it with him going forward. We are still very much in G rated territory.
My boys had seen all of the Star Wars movies that were released in/by 1st grade. (Rogue one was not out yet but DS2 was in 2nd when we went to the theatre.) But that doesn't mean you have to agree to allow it for your son at all.
That said, I don't think its crazy she chose it as an option since she allows it. Clearly, she knew it was borderline though since she did ask first and respected your decision.
I had a parent let my kids play call of duty at 7 and 10yo and did not ask. She fessed up later that she thought asking "forgiveness" later was easier. I was PISSED!!
Another parent lets her 7yo listen to DMX (unedited) and records him and posts on FB laughing about how cute he is swearing along.
My point is, that many parents will have different filters for their home/kids but it is ok as long as you trust them to ask first and respect your choices.
Update: They decided to go with ET, which I thought was fine, but she had to turn it off! Apparently it has teens smoking and calling each other all sorts of names, including "penis breath!" Ha! So..so much for trying to choose a more innocent movie. Whoops. They ended up watching "Return of the Jedi" again. I still feel bad for kind of messing up the plans, but I am also still glad that they didn't watch Rogue One.
