Just looking at the requirements for a new passport (not a renewal) for me and it says I need a copy of my birth certificate. Buuut, the name on my birth certificate isn’t my current name...so do I need my marriage certificate too? Also do I need to give them these documents or do they just need to see them?
I’ll probably try to call tomorrow as well to see if I can get a live person on the line. I have Friday morning off and was going to try to get some of this stuff taken care of. Also not looking forward to having to go to 2 different county offices as the kids were born in a different county that I was.
I sent them both my marriage certificate and my birth certificate. I got them sent to me by the state, no going in person for either. It took under a week. If you mail them to the passport people they mail them back to you.
My husband had to do a "new" application because his last one was from when he was under 16 years old. He sent in only his birth cert. But his name hasn't changed.
I did a renewal with my old passport and our marriage cert.
I would make an appointment with the PO (this can be done online and was super easy) and be prepared to send the birth cert as well as the marriage.
They will take both your birth certificate and marriage certificate and mail them back to you. It took maybe 3-4 weeks to get ours back this fall.
Also make sure where you are going either takes pictures (not all POs do and some only do during select hours) or you bring your own from like Walgreens.
I had to send in my marriage certificate for a renewal, and have had to send in a copy of birth certificates for the kids. They'll send them back separately from the passport. We like taking our pictures at Walgreens bc it's cheaper and better pictures.
I’ve been meaning to get mine renewed for the last seven years or so, but hate that you have to send in the old passport first.
Are you planning on going anywhere fun?
We are going on a western Caribbean Disney cruise with my extended family this summer! It’ll be chaotic but fun! Annnnd, we are probably going to Norway for a family reunion in 2yrs!

Oh, I’m jealous! I’ve recently started throwing extra money into a vacation fund, but have no idea where I’d want to go.
You have to give them your documents, they will send them back. I had a passport in my married name (we traveled after we were married, I remember getting a copy and giving it to them). I could renew my passport in November, the kids and H had to get new ones since H's expired in 2010. They got their passports like a week later, mine was a few weeks. We got ours done at the Library and it was easy.

They do return the old passport (with a hole punched through), if that is what you are worried about.
I know and I did get my first one back, but I’m still irrationally afraid of it getting lost in the mail. Not that I’m a globetrotter by any means. Lol.

Haha, I just sent mine away last week, and I have that irrational fear too (however, me missing out on some great flights because of my expired passport made me overcome that fear...)

G is currently campaigning for Disney. Lol.
I had to get passports for Disney. We got them and then our state got an extension for real ID. I'm still traveling with those because dammit, I spent money on them.

We’re another state with the Real ID thing too....what a PITA!

Do the kids need them too? H and I have them, but the kids do not.
We are planning Disney after the current MN extension expires (October I think), so I am keeping an eye on this.

I guess I didn’t realize MN got the extension. In any case, we’re doing a cruise and while we don’t NEED to have them since we’re leaving out of FL, it’s recommended since we will be at ports outside the US and would need them if something happens and we’d have to get off the boat.

I've been keeping an eye on it since I travel for work. Annoying to say the least!
