JD. While not strictly necessary (I could've been a patent agent), it is definitely helpful-to-necessary in my patent practice. It is also necessary if I want to make partner in my state (attorneys can't be partners with non-attorneys).
I hope nobody thought that I sounded condescending or anything in my post. I wasnt suggesting that if your degree doesnt have anything to do with your job, it is not any good. Hence why it took me a few times to type this post... to make sure it didnt sound wrong.

M.A. in French lit - required for my first job. That job got me into my current position which I like more but pays even less (I'm saying that because you mentioned "moving up in your field" and there's not really any "up" with a Master's in French lit.) In my current job, it's not a necessity, but it's an asset.

Ph.D., and then (not a degree but maybe equivalent to what you're asking) also ABPP, which is board certification in a specialty beyond the doctorate. I need the former for my position, the latter is just good to have.

I have a clincal doctorate and a MS. Bot are necessary for my current job as well as Board Certification (also something I have). A PhD might also be helpful when it comes to grant writing/funding, but I have no plans for that anytime soon. I seem to be moving up (promotion and tenure) without it, but I may consider it one day when my kid is older.
Masters in marketing. It's not directly related to my current line of work, but the business knowledge is applicable. I know it's bumped up my salary offer at least twice. I'm currently the highest paid among my peers despite them having almost 20 years on me.

Master's. It's kind of related to my current field, although not a requirement.
My advanced degree definitely helped me get my first job and I didn't pay for it (teaching assistantship paid my tuition and gave me a stipend), so it has already paid off.
I have a masters and counseling and I am currently a school counselor. I am now completing my second masters is educational leadership. I need it to become a principal.

I have two Bachelor's degrees. One is a BS in Biology and Biology/General Science Secondary Education. I am not using that one. The other is a BS in Nursing. I don't necessarily need a BSN to work as an RN, but it is in my field. And I do need a BSN to eventually head into grad school.
I will be getting a grad certificate. I could get a Master's but I am not interested in the job that demands it so I don't see a reason to waste my time or money.
I have an Associates but I don't use it as I am a photographer. I eventually want to go back to be my Bachelors in business but not until DH finishes his degree.

I have a PhD. I could have gotten jobs with only a MA in my field, but I would not be on the succession plan to take over for my boss without the doctorate. I mostly hire MAs, since that it what our local programs produce.
