I’ve recently ‘discovered’ graphic novels and am really enjoying exploring this new-to-me genre. What are your favorite graphic novels? I’d love to add ore to my to read list!
Saga - by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples -- this is definitely an M rated and out there space drama - very violent, lots of sex, can be upsetting at times (Vol. 7 was one of the most heartbreaking, gut-wrenching things I've ever read). This one is still a work in progress, so there are currently 8 volumes, and more to come (not sure if he has a planned ending for this one, but it seems like it will probably go for awhile. LOVE this illustrator. ufcasey was reading this one, and I read it because of her.
Y: The Last Man - also by Brian K Vaughan and illustrated by Pia Guerra -- the story is that "something" caused all of the men in the world to die off at the same time, and follows the single surviving man and his male monkey who also survived and the women trying to figure out what happened. It has 10 volumes (I have one left), and I read it because I liked Saga so much and another friend suggested that I should read it, but it's just so-so. Some issues are great, and the premise is good, but the story kind of wanders, the language is rough/crude/offensive at times, and now that I've gotten to the part where they sort of reveal what they think what happened I feel kind of like I did after watching the TV show Lost. It can also be violent, and I'm also not a fan of the illustrator.
Persepolis / Persepolis 2 / The Complete Persepolis - Marjane Satrapi's memoir about her childhood in Tehran, the Islamic Revolution, and the overthrow of the Shah. It's been awhile since I've read this one, but it was really interesting history. There are only 2 total volumes here, so it's pretty short.
If you are into anime, you could always go with some manga, like Death Note (I haven't read the manga, but it's my favorite anime of all time).
Or you could read the graphic novels that accompany other books/TV shows. The Walking Dead is based on a graphic novel and there are at least 29 volumes. There are also graphic novels for Stephen King's The Dark Tower, and GRRM's Game of Thrones.
I haven't read these and don't know the illustrators, but they are on my to be read list: Death by Neil Gaiman The Best We Could Do: An Illustrated Memoir by Thi Bui Lazarus by Greg Rucka

I really enjoyed Persepolis. It’s what took me down this path. I’ve never read anything similar to your other recommendations, but I’ll use this as an opportunity to try something new. Thanks!

I've only recently started really reading graphic novels myself, but I've found that I really enjoy them. My library had a challenge last year that included reading a graphic novel, which is how I ended deciding to read Saga, and I kind of thought I'd read the first volume and be done, but I became obsessed and devoured all of the available volumes.
Yes to Saga!!! All day, every day I will recommend that graphic novel series, it's the best I have just started reading graphic novels too so I haven't yet found anything else I love as much as Saga. Other ones I liked are the first volumes of Game of Thrones and Mercy Thompson Moon Called book to graphic novel adaptations. Ones on my list to still try out that I haven't read yet are:
Locke & Key by Joe Hill Adulthood Is a Myth by Sarah Andersen March by John Robert Lewis
Maus was really good, but it is a Holocaust story. Just fair warning that the content can be a little intense, even if the characters are depicted as mice and cats.
