Hi everyone. I feel bad that I haven’t checked in in a few months but I was getting obsessive about TTC and it helped to take a step back from the board.
I had a pelvic ultrasound this morning (our first steps for IF diagnostics) and it was over 30 minutes long and well over a hundred captures (I passed time by counting). It also included kidneys, which I was not expecting. If you’ve had this kind of ultrasound before, is this the norm? I have to ask because right now I’m convinced I’m dying. 😂😭

I'm so sorry you are dealing with IF, too. My u/s to confirm my uterine septum was really long this week-- maybe >20 min? The doctor was really chatty and explained everything pretty thoroughly, though.

I’m sorry. Those darn ultrasounds are so invasive (my opinion anyways.)
My first one was very long as they were capturing images of all sorts of stuff as a baseline.
I also do medicated cycles and am monitored through blood work and ultrasounds and those are shorter (usually 5-10 mins) to measure follicles and uterine lining. Depending on how “cooperative” my ovaries are being it can be longer, for example if they have to wrench the wand around multiple times trying to get a good image of one or the other.
I’m guessing this is perfectly normal and you’re not dying, but you have my sympathy because the whole thing is quite unpleasant.
Thank you all. I’m wondering if it was just a lengthy baseline type thing. I was sent to radiology in a different building and it wasn’t done by my dr so zero explanation. How long should I wait for them to call before I call for results? I forgot to ask how the follow up goes (this is with an obgyn). I also got a referral to a fertility clinic for an HSG and DH has a SA next week with his PCP but otherwise no follow up appt made with my obgyn yet so I’m assuming he’ll call when he receives the u/s. I’m kind of regretting that we’re not seeing one dr but it’s cheaper this way.
I had one last year, not for IF but to get baseline measurements because I was 35 and my mom died fairly young of ovarian cancer. (I also had a mammogram and a breast u/s in the same series of tests.) I honestly have no idea how long it took because it felt like a gd eternity. I would not take a long exam to mean they found anything suspicious or bad, just that they were being super thorough. I would rather they take their time, as unpleasant as it is, if it means they get everything they need and I don't have to go back and do it all again for one angle they missed. Now THAT would be the worst.
Obviously on mine they were focused on my ovaries in particular, but I have no idea what else they wanted/got images of.
I had an u/s after a bad gallbladder attack and they were very thorough, looking at my whole abdomen, not just the gallbladder. I was 7.5w PP though, so apparently they like to examine the uterus to make sure the problem isn't there... it wasn't. The innumerable gallbladder stones were the issue and out went my gallbladder.
My U/Ss have ranged, depending on how cooperative my ovaries were being. Some of them are short and sweet, others are painful and long, especially when looking at the left.

Saaaaaaaame. It's always fun to play "where'd your ovary go?"

Story of my life. My longest ultrasound was an hour and a half, thanks to the mass in my lower right abdomen that they were trying to decide between being a weird, misshapen, non-functioning ectopic kidney (since my right one is missing) and a weird, misshapen, non-functioning ovary (since my right one is also missing).
They ended up deciding on kidney, but goodness gracious that was a long hour and a half.
Dr called with results. Bicornuate uterus confirmed (again) and a uterine fibroid on the outside edge of uterus. Neither of which should have any bearing on fertility. Recommends moving forward with HSG.
