I thought you all might be a great resource! My dd is 9.5 and I have noticed she is starting to get just a few clogged pores, mainly on her nose. I know it comes with the territory..... age, puberty etc. Fun times!! I thought it might be time to get started on a skin care regimen... by regimen, I mean basically washing her face at night. Prior to this she pretty much takes a shower every or every other night just depending on what we have going on. I bought her CereVe foaming face wash and had her watch me a few times to make sure she cleans her face well. As I type this I realize I should probably buy her a second bottle for the shower. I would imagine at her age, I should encourage her to wash her face nightly. Should she be doing anything else? My face feels so tight after I wash it; it's always dying for moisturizer.... is that necessary for her? Or is there another face wash you would rec? Basically what should I introduce to her now, in regards to skin care? She loves all things girlly, products etc so I think she'll be all over this and very excited. Thanks!
Not the most fun but maybe the Cerave AM lotion with spf in it.
I thought about that. For sure never too early to use a daily spf. Stupid question- if she washes her face at night and follows with a bit of lotion, will the spf be effective the next day? (I know this is no substitute for sunscreen if she's going to be in the sun; I'm just thinking about a daily lotion that is non comedogenic.)
Alps79, She needs a night lotion that doesn't have spf in it- the spf will clog her pores if she's putting it on at night and not washing it off first thing in the morning.

I wondered about that. At age 9 does she *need* a night lotion? My main goal is just to help her clear up her clogged pores and actually, they are already so much better. She just started washing her face Tues night. That said, I want to encourage her to take care of her skin on a daily basis.
If she's using a cleanser that isn't stripping her skin of moisture then she may be fine with not using a moisturizer at night. That said, I generally think a light moisturizer is a good idea for pretty much everyone who is old enough to be doing any sort of skincare routine.

I agree with this. Also her skin’s needs are going to change from day to day, with stress, exercise, puberty changes, getting her period, etc. she might want a moisturizer some nights but not others. So I think helping her find a few products and letting her decide which one(s) she needs to use on a given night will not only help her skin, but may make it more fun for her.
I am a big fan of cliniques’ dramatically different lotion for those times when I need light moisture. It’s a bit pricey but I’ve never had it clog my pores and it lasts forever.
I agree with not using spf overnight. I’ve broken out from that myself a few times. I’ve found the Mario Badescu cucumber spray to be lightly moisturizing after cleansing and it’s pretty affordable.
I'd ask her how her skin feels after cleansing. If it's tight and dry, then yes she definitely needs something. You can get a fairly inexpensive nighttime moisturizer, I'm sure. CeraVe PM is too light for my dry skin, but could work for her. Or just a basic CeraVe or Cetaphil lotion. SPF during the day, of course.
DD1 is the same age as yours and has been starting to get clogged pores as well. Right now she uses cetaphil. Two other brands that were recommended to us were Simple Face wash and night time moisturizer and also Burt’s Bees. So I’ll be getting her those as well. She sometimes likes sheet face masks so I get her some every once in a while as well as cleansing towelettes.
So ironically a friend asked this same question on FB last night and one of the recommendations was baby shampoo with a clairisonic.. several people chimed after saying it worked really well for their child as well. Mine is too young for a clairisonic IMO but I thought I'd share the info here. Of course 127 people rec'd R&F. Another brand that was rec'd is called Simple and it seems readily available and economic.
