I feel like I should update that DS hit 4 foul balls yesterday. Everyone cheered so loud for him and he was really thrilled. I was really happy too! Baby steps.
waverly, I've heard enough stories to be scared of hockey.
Travis Roy is ingrained in my memory. He was ~16 seconds into his first shift in college hockey, fell awkwardly and slid head first into the boards. Broken neck. Paralyzed from the neck down.
I just watched a story about a guy that broke his neck 3 SEPARATE TIMES playing hockey, was paralyzed each time, and each time regained the ability to walk... got back on skates, broke it again... back on skates, broke it again...
Lots of concussions and post concussion syndrome. And the teeth. One of my friends was wearing a cage, and someone's stick got caught in the cage. He thought my friend was holding it, so he was wrestling with the stick trying to get it free - and broke every one of my friend's teeth. Complete accident. He was wearing a cage (no mouth guard).
I grew up in a rink, though I never played. All my cousins and close friends played. I've seen so many weird things happen that I decided I didn't want my kids to participate. I think roller hockey or floor hockey would be fine, but it just seems like the combination of ice and sharp skate blades makes for some dangerous situations.

We had our first Tball game on Saturday and it was pretty cute. Annoyingly, they practiced for half an hour, then played one inning. It was a lot of anticipation for DS, and not much action. We have another game tonight.

I grew up in a football town and attended football schools and I’m a firm no on tackle football and 4 wheelers. I was riding behind my high school boyfriend when he flipped a 4 wheeler once. I was fine but he bounced off a tree and broke is collar bone and it could have been so much worse.
4 wheelers...DH has one. He has taken DD out once with the neighbor. His choice of riding is on old logging roads in the hills and driving less than 20mph looking for wild life. Sand Dune 4 wheeling is really big here and there are accidents all the time and usually 1 death a year. Luckily DH has no interest in doing that.
Tackle football is a no. Rec starts at 4th or 5th grade. Pop Warner (club) starts at 1st or 2nd grade.
My kid is weird and has had more injuries from elementary school than she has gotten at the gym. I don't know if it is because at gymnastics everything is closely supervised or what but I find it very ironic.
I’m ok with football and rugby pending the coach. If they are teaching tackle (wrap up, how to fall) a couple years before tackle seasons IMO that’s what it takes. If DS plays he will wear a scrum cap fitted with monitoring for concussion force hits. We will start with an impact test and image after any event, and pull him if needed. I had three concussions in college - one soccer, one football, one rugby. The first two were just intramurals! I got a fourth concussion playing touch rugby as an adult. I was on the sideline and hit my head on the bench (tripped over a cooler). DH slipped at a swim meet in HS and got a concussion. So injuries aren’t super sport dependent for me. ExH had a skull fracture and shattered his cheekbone - I feel like we have strong ped sports med Connections here so diagnosis and management would be easy.

Jesus! FWIW in DD's roller hockey league the players wear cages AND mouth guards. If you fall, you can get a concussion from your chin closing violently and your teeth crashing together. Same for flag football; they wore mouth guards even though they didn't tackle because there are still lots of falls. Also the butt end of the stick has to have a "butt end" topper which makes it fat enough it won't fit through the cage of a helmet. It could possibly go under so not foolproof, but I feel like this league is as safe as it can be for what the sport is.
akafred, I know concussions can happen in most sports. My nephew has had several as a soccer goalie. I would support my kids playing floor or roller hockey if they wanted to. I feel like removing ice from the equation makes it exponentially safer.
Thanks- I am learning some things. I had no idea there were scrum caps that monitor for concussions or that flag football starts teaching them about tackle.
I had no idea a stick could go in a cage either. DS has starting this year imagining himself as an athlete or very athletic. He isn’t by a long shot, but I am not going to tell him that. So I just am not sure how long he will have this interest. Could be just a few years or could all the way through HS. So we’ll see how many sports he ends up playing.
DS had a good tee ball game this week after last week’s debacle. The difference is that instead of DH being on the field with him, I was. He just pays more attention to me. Plus I figured out his trigger is me saying “if you do/don’t (whatever, throw to first base, pay attention to who is batting/run as fast as you can to the next base), you’ll lose!” The boy hates losing!
Also I can barely even communicate about this because I am stressed - DD’s soccer team has three players and the coach moving. So they need a new coach or to rehome a few players in groups (by birth year). It’s two weeks to close of indoor registration. DD could ask any team to join and they would take her. But I am truly not excited about any of the other teams. And I don’t want to even shop teams and coaches by attending practices four - five nights nights a week because the season is about to end. One other mom and I are working with the coach and league on a coach or barring that, moving a group of girls to a good coach, not great team - our girls can pass and score so it could be a pretty awesome team.
ATVs are a hard no for DH and have become one for me. In the last year I’ve had an employee’s child die in accident, another’s child lose a foot, & another child end up in the hospital unconscious with broken ribs, a punctured lung and a fractured leg. I grew up on them riding from trailers to the pits at the race track while my uncle raced but now there is fear of them.
These sports updates also have me glad we decided to wait one more year to do sign ups for DD. Not sure I’m ready for everything a season entails.
I really have no opinion on ATVs because I have no experience. Most of the people I know who have them (which is a very small number) use them on farms or large properties to get around. When I had a horse who was boarded, that family was 3 generations on one farm. The grandparents lived in the original house, and the parents and kids lived in a newer house they built a little further down. They all rode ATVs between them and to check fences, feed the horses, tend the gardens, etc. But it was for utility not amusement. I don't really have any concerns with that. But it sounds like you guys are talking much more recreational.
True to form, I’ve had 3 responses regarding tonight’s softball practice. One of the 3 that said she was coming, then her mom came back and said she hurt herself and might be out for several games. Her mom is my only assistant coach. Could get messy.
mae0111 - assistant coaches bail when kids are injured? That is crazy. Ours show up with their injured kids. My kids stop by practices with treats when they are injured at least a couple times. It’s that TEAM thing - I hope the asst makes a good choice!
What is your philosophy on staying for practices and/ or games? Go one time to practice and then don't stay after that? Stay for all practices and games? Stay for games only? Don't stay for anything?

It depends on the age and the team. If its is a team with us knowing everyone, I will drop off at practice and go run some errands. If I don't know anyone on the team, I usually stay. If the kids are older, and as I become more comfortable with the coach, I may run some close by errands or go for a walk after a few practices. Games I stay.
As for ATVs they are a way of life where I live. Recreational riding is a big thing, and DS is allowed to ride his own 4wheeler (15). Dd rides with me or her dad. She can ride around the yard in sight by herself at home. No starting the ATV without a helmet. No ATV on the road, obviously, no joining a ride when parent is not on a bike behind you. I'm not a big fan of riding, but this seems to be a thing, so we will load up a couple of times a year for a ride.
Depends on the age and what it all entails. I also have an only so am not needing to shuffle others around. I went to all of DD's t-ball games and someone was with her at all practices. She was 5 at the time and we didn't know anyone else who was playing. I also ended up helping basically at all the practices and games I was at.
Gymnastics she doesn't compete yet. For classes she can handle herself without needing anyone there. This started around 5 but then she is in an enclosed building and we've been with the gym since she was 2 so know all the staff well. Now I will stay and watch but have no problems leaving her and running to the store or doing something else if needed. Practice is 90 minutes but gives me very little time to do anything if I drive back and forth from home.
Riding lessons I stay but then that is expected for liability issues. Yesterday we did barn stuff and I walked a lot and it was really relaxing and enjoyable. I also stay for swim lessons but that is because they are only 28 minutes long.
I drop off for practices and go to all games (unless conflicts then alternate between kids). Sometimes I stay with DS because DD is at practice at the same time and other DD comes to walk him home and I go to get DD. All bets are off - DD wants to play club and I am scrambling to find a rec team that can give her a good level of play instead.
I only have one kid, and most of her practices are 20 min from home roughly and last an hour, so I stay for a lot of practices but sometimes drop off. We both attend all games unless one of us is sick or something like that.

My kids are 6 (kinder) and 4 (preK) so H or I stay for all practices. Maybe I'd drop off next year? What is the dividing line? Like are ya'll already dropping off at age 6? If not when did you start?
Coaching vent 1. Why do you sign your kid up to play volleyball when you are playing on 2 softball teams and you can't make any of the weekend that I gave you in advance when you signed up for the team?
2. No I do not know what time we play this weekend. If I knew, you would have gotten a text. I am sorry you cannot complete your spring cleaning schedule for Saturday.
3. This is probably petty on my part, but when you have a high school kid volunteering her time to come help our team with both practices and games for free, for over a month, driving 20 minutes both ways, I kinda feel like the parent that only coughed up $5 for the gift I asked everyone to contribute to is a bit skimpy. - volleyball is a small team and we have two sisters, so not a big group.
At this point DH and/or I am/are coaching for every sport, so we stay. Otherwise I might drop off, depending on whether or not I have errands to do nearby.
I just talked to the local league and there are independent club teams playing in the competitive bracket. It’s exactly what we want for DD. Competitive soccer without club prices - and the ability to continue other sports. Guys cross your fingers that 1) they have openings 2) they invite DD to guest practice 3) she rocks them and gets club contract offers. And while I’m at it - that they train locally. No more than three nights a week. That isn’t too much to ask!!!

I started dropping DD off at 5 for gymnastics. DS at age 6 for gymnastics. Age 7 for soccer classes.
I never dropped off for Basketball for DS because it seemed like all the parents stayed. It was kind of worded in a way that I took it they wanted parents to stay.
Haven’t done any other team sports besides basketball yet. I was just wondering for baseball. They have 1 practice night and 1 game night a week. So maybe I drop off for practice but stay for game? I’ll stay for the first 3 weeks/ practices (no games that week) and see if I feel comfortable leaving him.
So opening day and team pictures are tomorrow. I have 3 kids (out of 11) that have not come to practice, and their parents have not responded to emails. Their kids do not have uniforms. I don’t know where they live, nor do I plan to run all over creation to deliver their uniforms. I sent out another email (via a league app, so no mistyped email addresses) yesterday telling parents to reach out to me directly to set up a time to pick up uniforms. No one had. Photos at 1030 tomorrow, I’m gone all day today and tonight. Sorry kids! Can’t pmay without a uniform! Looks like you’re changing in the car or the filthy bathroom at the field!
