Yep. Pack your stuff and take it home before you give notice because you won’t be able to take it is the thing here. Personal items are mailed, so things like glass awards or picture frames could break.
One of my directs put in his letter that he was unable to work the two weeks so he wasn’t paid for that time - which is apparently a loophole. They have to pay unless you tell them you won’t work.
I just had this convo with DH - that he absolutely should not take vaca time after putting in notice as if he doesn’t, they will walk him out and pay him for two weeks PLUS the accrued vaca time.
Yes, in some jobs. If you are going to a competitor or otherwise are likely to try to take info with you, we will walk you out the same day. Sometimes we pay, depending on how we feel about you. Most of the time we do not.
In my position I would not be allowed to work. I run payroll and have access to protected information.
If it were our receptionist then she’d be allowed to finish her time out.
When my boss put her notice in the moved her out after a week but she got to stay because they were talking with what it would take to keep her and they fired her boss the same week she put her notice in.
My understanding is we get paid for the two weeks plus vacation payout.
It is common here if you are going to a competitor. If you are going to a different industry, they will usually allow you to work. In either case you get paid for the two weeks.

2chatter I had no idea people got paid for unused vacation until DH went to a different FD. The unpaid vacation was a nice parting gift along with his comp time.
Industry standard for us is you get walked out and you leave commission on the table. But in my experience if someone is going to a competitor they've already gathered the info they need to take clients and the damage is already done so walking them out doesn't really accomplish much.

We've done both. It depends on how they feel about you and where you're going. There's no law in this state that says you have to pay the two weeks out. Normally if you don't work it - either because we told you not to or whatever other reason - we would not pay it. We pay out vacation if you leave on good terms. That is, if you give us notice, even if we didn't have you work the notice period.

Mostly you give notice and work it. There are a few cases where you might be walked out (sensitive project or you’re going to a major competitor) but if you are walked you are paid.
In my former company, sales people were walked out the same day and paid for the two weeks when they resigned. I was in marketing, and at my level, I was required to give 60 calendar days' notice. If I didn't, they could claw back my annual bonus.

I’m currently working my 4 week notice. At my company people in management are expected to give 4 and the rest 2. It’s not required but it’s a bridge burner to not work out your notice. My industry does do the whole escort people out thing but not in the particular part of it where i am working currently. When I fire people we have them immediately escorted off the base by security and they are only given a short amount of time to pack to their stuff.
It depends. My current company people will give notice and work the two weeks if they aren’t going to a direct competitor. People who are going to a competitor are generally allowed to stay out the day, pack up themselves, and say goodbye to people, then they are paid for 2 weeks. It would have to be very acrimonious to immediately escort them out.
DH, on the other hand, is considering switching jobs and he anticipates an immediate walk out.
When I left my last job, I was 100% anticipating being walked out the same day with two weeks pay - which was the company's standard protocol for when you go to a competitor. But my boss had to decide not to do it. She was convinced that the company I was going to wasn't a competitor. Little did she know, they were looking at 4 of her deals already, 3 of which we won.
It was so pointless. I mostly just shitted around on the internet all day, had a lot of long lunches, and had one massive blowout fight with a colleague who was one of the reasons I was leaving.
And then two weeks into the new job, I got a cease and desist letter for "stealing confidential information" (AKA my personal contact list from outlook - I'd made sure to strip out any clients/prospects).

I am the person in our company who sends the cease and desist letters. I really don't like doing it with the exception of people that do really egregious things. Our industry is small but out in the public and so it's very possible for me to run into people I sent letters to. Or people want to go some place and I'm like -- no lets not go there, I sent them a cease and desist letter....
Never. Here in nonprofit land, you get extra work during your notice period and people frequently pull (unpaid) OT to leave things in a good spot. I’ve never heard of anyone giving less then 2 weeks. 4 is more common. My current company got someone to stay three months after she put in her notice. No vacation payout unless the state requires it.
