I love mail, and I love books, and I've seen a thousand Facebook ads promoting BookoftheMonth.com, so I finally signed up today. I got The Book of Essie and Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance as my books, and I am very excited for them to come! It's $15/month for a hardcover book and you get a free book when you use a coupon code or referral link (here is mine if you're interested: www.mybotm.com/3iplgoesi29).
You get to pick from five books for the book of the month and then a much wider list if you want to add extras, which are $10 (other than the free one when you sign up). My coworker signed up too and we each picked two different books and plan to swap, so we'll each have four new books to read in June and two each month after that. I can't wait!.
If you do another club, post the name here! I want to check out the various options since I've only committed to one month.
H signed me up for Quarterly for mother's day, where you get a book box delivered once a quarter. I haven't gotten my first box yet but it looks kind of interesting? I can't decide how much I'm going to like it. One of my favorite parts of reading is actually picking the book, so I like the idea of the Book of the Month better because you get some say. I dunno. We'll see.
I haven't joined any of the book club things because I pick books based on what I feel like reading that day. So even if someone picked books for me from the list of books I want to read, I would still not like it. That and I rarely buy physical books (ebooks all the way), I only buy a real book if I have already read it and loved it.
But I really do like how they give you lots of cute book related stuff. I once saw someone got a scarf that I totally envied.
I got the book of the month club for my mom. She is completely computer illiterate, so I set it up so I choose the book for her. I'm struggling this month to choose a book. The Book of Essie was the only one I thought she might be somewhat interested in. I might just skip this month.
I'm a member of book of the month. Joined in Jan. When I looked at the book list last year a lot of my favorites and ones on my TBR were on it so I decided it was worth the $ to check out for now. That said this was the first month I skipped a book, wasn't interested in any of them.
I signed up for BOTM when they were having their free month offer. I was disappointed. I'm not sure if my expectations were too high, but I thought it was for a book and some bookish trinkets (tea, bookmarks etc) I did the two months and I got the books only. I felt like the selections were very narrow and that $15 wasn't that great of a deal. For instance, I got The Philosopher's Flight one month (I enjoyed the book!) and it's currently on Amazon for $14.91 for the hardcover.
I think it's probably an interesting idea for those who are very open minded to reading whatever crosses their path and aren't serial book buyers. It could be a fun thing if you're a casual reader, but if you're packing away a lot of books per month, I didn't really see the benefit.
Two side notes. They come with BOTM stamped on it. I think it's both on the dust jacket and printed inside. It's a small thing, but it annoys me. I want a regular copy. It irrationally annoys me when I look at my spines and see the logo. Second, their customer service was really lacking. I don't know if they got too big too fast, but it took days and days for them to get back to me. I emailed within plenty of time to cancel before the next month, but they didn't get to it in time. They also charged me for the free month. In the end, they refunded me, but it was really annoying to have to keep following up with them.
Sorry, I'm a downer. I am interested in other book boxes, but I haven't found one to settle on yet. Mostly I want cozy things to do/have while I read.
