We will be doing family pictures in Hawaii next month. The boys are wearing Hawaiian shirts that are navy with white flowers and shorts. Dh is wearing a really light gray button up shirt with dark gray shorts. I have no idea what to wear. I’m a short chubby size 12 and am top heavy (larger bust and tummy and arms) with skinnier hips/legs. Any ideas?

I would suggest aqua, turquoise, or coral for you (depending on what goes best with your complexion) to go with the gray, white, and navy. You may want to do a more muted tone of those colors. Light green would also be a nice complementary color with what the guys are wearing.
I would say maybe find a dress in a cut that is flattering for you and pair it with a white cardigan. I remember photographers saying that arms don't photograph well. (I have chubby arms, so I always try to wear either long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves in pictures.
I'd definitely avoid sleeveless, my friend who's a photographer emphasizes that all the time. It leaves too much skin and takes the focus away from your face. Maybe do a maxi dress? You could put a jean jacket over instead of a cardigan too.
Avoid any bulky items - I wore a velvet J Crew blazer in fall pics one year and it made me look heavier. A line or empire or basque or shirt dress for a flattering fit. A grey swing dress with a bright necklace could tie you and DH together visually and enable a pop of color (like a chunky coral necklace) in accessories. I like things to be uniform with accents in pics. Do you have Charming Charlie? I always find great dresses there and it’s all grouped by color.
If you want to emphasize hips and legs, how about light capris and a pretty kind of blousy shirt in one of the colors mentioned here? Or a cute skirt with a top? I love Love Love dresses, but I’m very much an hourglass shape so they tend to work with my body type. I’m hiding my hips with them!

what about a shorter dress with an open / lightweight kimono style topper? It will give you arm coverage but you can still show off nicer legs in a short dress.
sandandsea, I usually get fun, funky jewelry from Walmart. They had a bunch of cute, bright colored chunky necklaces for like $5 the other day when I was there. There was a cute one that was a wide braid of strands of seed beads. Came in a bunch of colors.
I have a similar one with short sleeves in burgundy and really like it but didn’t want extra sleeve bulk for the pictures (the short sleeves aren’t long enough for pictures though, more like a cap sleeve). I think it’s super flattering and a very easy comfy dress.
