It’s only just July and DD’s hair has already turned to straw. Short of cutting all of it off, do you know of any conditioner or something I can use to detangle and protect it from further chlorine damage?
Worlds most exciting Saturday night post, I know. Carry on...
My hair dresser recommended a clarifying shampoo to get rid of pool chemicals.
If dryness is the issue instead of shampooing after the pool co wash instead maybe something like suave coconut conditioner is a good cheap favorite or maybe you already have a co wash. Some people say not to shampoo after the pool for the dryness issue.
Also deep condition once a week with a hair mask. I think mine is Ouidad.
We just started using Honest Co shampoo and conditioner on DD’s hair for the same reason and it is AMAZING. When I rinse her hair, I literally see the tangles untying themselves because her hair is so silky. We didn’t take it with us on vacation, and really noticed the difference when we went back to Suave combo shampoo/conditioner. And even using my Aveda conditioner for dry hair didn’t work as well on her hair as the Honest Co.
Thanks y’all. It’s definitely dryness that’s the issue so I’ll try shampooing less and the Honest Co. products. Seems unlikely I’ll get her to wet her head before jumping in (this is at our gym and she’s usually half way out the door before I have my suit all the way on) but I’ll try it!

If you can't get her her hair wet before jumping in the pool, try smearing just a TINY bit of conditioner on her hair before she gets in.

I kept forgetting to buy the special shampoo last summer, and someone recommended baking soda. I make a paste with the baking soda and some water, apply it to her hair, and let it sit while the water warms up for her shower. Then rinse it out and shampoo/ condition. It feels weird when it's on, but it definitely helps.

Ultra swim works wonders and they now also make a conditioner. I leave a little of the conditioner right in the girls' hair.
When we do swim lessons I have also sprayed something on their hair when they get out if we are changing, brushing and going to the next activity without stopping home to shower. It is supposed to cancel out the chlorine. I'll see if I can find it but you'll probably see it if you search chlorine spray on amazon.
ETA: It says currently unavailable but the kind we got was Swim Spray Chlorine Removal Spray.
We use a Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo that's made to get the chlorine out. It has a blue cap and is either called Two or Three. I can't remember which one is for chlorine but it says on the bottle. Then we use their Detangler conditioner and I put Moroccanoil on the girls' hair when I brush it out.
Leave in conditioner works well apply after the evening hair wash.
Ex-swimmer...does she wear her hair down or up while in the pool? If it is down try putting it up it a braid or bun. Swim caps help but make your head hot for just play time and they don't keep your hair dry so it still get wet but not the constant soaking. I lived with a bleached blond strip at the base of my neck for years as it was the only party that wouldn't stay in my cap, to this day it won't grow longer than 4 inches but it isn't blond any more.
