I was using regular drugstore brand shampoo & conditioner, and then turned to Pureology Hydrate (purple bottle), and my hair had never felt better. I've been using Pureology Hydrate for almost 2 years now, but my hair is starting to feel greasy when it dries (even though I only put conditioner on my bottom half of my hair, as usual).
Aka- I've been doing the exact same thing for 2 years now, but my hair never feels fully clean and I still feel like there is build up in my hair despite long rinsings in the shower. I don't use any hair product, so the build up has to be coming from shampoo & conditioner.
I recently started using Kenra's Clarifying shampoo 1x/week, and on those days, my hair does feel very clean.
Do I need to use a different brand, and if so, which? Any ideas on what to do?
I alternate between WEN and Hempz triple moisture rich shampoo and conditioner and I feel alternating keeps from getting build up. I really like the Hempz brand. Ulta currently has their liters on sale and Hempz is half off right now.
The conditioner has silicone in it and the shampoo is sulfate free. You need sulfates to wash silicone out of your hair. Either look for a shampoo with sulfate (which is the more harsh option for your hair) or find a conditioner without silicone (check ingredient list for words ending in 'cone').

Can recommend a hydrating shampoo that has sulfates so it can work with the Pureology conditioner with silicones?

I can't actually. I don't use sulfate shampoo because I color my hair and I don't use silicones in any hair products because it messes with my natural curl. Sorry!
One other thing to consider is that your hair may be getting too much moisture and what you need is a hair mask with protein. I am just now learning about balancing moisture with protein in my hair products. My high porosity hair tends to need more moisture, so protein treatments are new to me. For some people if they have greasy hair, but it still feels dry, what they need is a protein product.

Not to derail this thread from the original poster, could you share what shampoo and conditioner you do use? Just totally curious what others do; my hair is color-treated and curly.
I have dark, thick hair that leans towards being dry. I get my hair colored every 6 weeks. Damn grays! I may try using the Pureology Hydrate shampoo and the Pureology Sheer conditioner.

ETA: edit to make sense
I put my routine in the wavy hair thread, not in this one! I have sensitive skin so I am selective on what I use for my hair. Additionally I am very aware my products are on the pricey end. I am sure there are less expensive products with similar ingredients and performance, but I am no longer willing to move away from what works.
I use Kerastase fluidealiste shampoo and densifuque conditioner. I also really like Kevin Murphy Angel rinse for my leave-in.

There are always so many suggestions I just never know where to start, lol. I have thin/fine hair, and not a lot of it, also well as sensitivities. Thanks!!

Protein leaves my hair feeling like straw. I hate it.

I've heard this response when your hair doesn't need protein. I've heard can also be more like wet or mush straw at your scalp. It sounds terrible!

I have always relied on my hair stylist for suggestions because of her expertise to know my hair type. My hair is also fine and my whole body hates coconut and most of it's derivatives. I've found what works and doesn't cause a whole bunch of skin and hair issues. I tried pureology and it left my hair very oily and with a ton of build-up. It took me a long time to figure out that silicone causes oil production for my hair, just like it does on my skin.
So often it does seem like such a crapshoot to find the right products. I found a hair mask at Trader Joe's that I love, but my hair is another that can't have too much protein or it'll get dry, straw-like, and extra tangly.
I think Davines might have some good products, but I haven't used them in years. I can't go too hydrating because I have fine hair. I have learned some silicones are okay, but too many and my hair gets temperamental.
