I did a saline sonogram, not a dye test, but I imagine they are similar. I took some advil ahead of time, the whole thing took about a half hour, I had some minor cramping, and I drove myself with no issues. I hope this is the same for you.

I also had a saline sono, not an HSG but they are similar. I took 800 ibuprofen 30 mins before and my wife was there but I would have been fine to drive. I had very intense cramping while they did the procedure, like very very bad period cramps, and afterwards some leakage (bring a pad in case they don't give you one) but it wasn't too horrible. I have heard that if you have blocked tubes it can be more painful but hopefully that won't be the case for you.

I've had a couple of HSGs. First was painful during (like really bad period cramps), second did not hurt at all. Probably depends on the doctor doing the test. Idrove myself home both times. Take some painkillers beforehand, and have a pad for leakage after. Your H may or may not be able to be in the room with you- it's an x-ray, so it's for safety reasons.
My saline sonograms were uncomfortable but not painful.
I had awful cramping during mine as soon as they inflated the ballon in the catheter. I went from zero pain (just a little discomfort from the speculum) to the worst period cramps in like half a second. They moved VERY quickly after that doing the actual x-ray and then removing the catheter, it really only lasted maybe 3 minutes? As soon as the catheter was removed I felt 80% better.
I donโt mean to scare you, I was just totally unprepared for the pain I felt. But, it was short! Iโm glad my H was with me because I was pretty shaky afterwards, I think just from adrenaline.
If I had to do it again, I would definitely take medication ahead of time.
Iโve never had pain like that during any IUI transfer, mock embryo transfer or the saline sonogram, so maybe it was a fluke?
I've had 2 HSG's and both of them were fine. I had slight cramping but there was no need for DH to drive me. If you let them know you're self pay they often give you a huge discount. I think both of my HSG's were around $400 which is far less than they would have billed insurance. Had they billed my insurance it would have been denied and I'd be responsible for the entire bill.
I only took 2 tylonel about 30 min before and the pain really was nothing more than a pap.

I'm the horror story on the HSG. Saline sono went great. Not fun, but no problem. HSG, the procedure itself wasn't bad, but it showed blocked tubes and almost no uterus. I drove myself there and home on a Friday, my DH was out of town for the weekend. Within a few hours, my abdomen had started swelling, and I was in so much pain I couldn't stand up straight. That lasted about 36 hours, and very slowly receded. We determined afterward that I must have been allergic to the contrast. There are alternates, like FemVue, if you have that issue! My recommendation: it should be fine, but don't be home alone after, in case something is off!
My HSG was fine for inserting, and not painful but very uncomfortable (pressure in my abdomen) during. It only lasts a couple minutes and a nurse held my hand to make sure I held still. I drove myself home and had very mild cramping that evening. My RE did my saline sono, and it was extremely easy and painless.
I had a saline sonohysterogram (FemVue) and it was the worst cramping I've ever had in my life. BUT, it only lasted during the time of the procedure and completely went away as soon as we were done. I drove myself and actually went shopping afterwards. DH was there, which I was thankful for, because I was able to hold (and squeeze) his hand the whole time. Definitely wear a pantyliner because there is some leakage afterwards. But everyone's experience is different. Some people say it doesn't hurt at all.
My saline sonos were fine, I didn't take anything for them. For my HSG I took meds ahead of time. I did not have it done with an RE which I regret. The guy doing it had a hard time getting in my cervix and it went downhill from there. It was about 1 minute of pain, some crampinv, and a little bleeding. However, I'm a firm believer if I had had it done by my RE it would have been much better since they do them all the time.
I had a HSG last month. It was uncomfortable and hurt like a B for about two minutes while the dye passed through and opened a blockage. After that, everything was fine and I went back to work directly after.
I've done both the HSG and saline. DH came with me for both but I would have been totally fine driving home alone after them. I was fortunate and didn't have pain for either of them, some discomfort but not pain. The saline was more uncomfortable than the hsg but once it was over I felt totally fine.
Good luck. I think the anticipation is usually way worse the the actual procedures.

My HSG was no issue. I'm pretty sure they told me I could take something before hand for pain, and I didn't, and only had minimal cramping. As I've said ten thousand times, my cervix is a complete asshole, so the speculum is always the worst part for me.
It was uncomfortable to say the least. They ask me to move my leg a lot since I was automatically moving into a fetal position. When they were done I felt a lot better, and by the time I got to my car the cramping was basically gone. I drove myself.
