Anyone been to San Miguel de Allende?

I have heard it's a beautiful town and a friend recently visited and raved about it. I have a group of 6 couple friends and three of us turn 40 next year. We want to plan a long weekend trip and are thinking about San Miguel. It's a quick, reasonable, nonstop flight for us. We mainly like good food, drinks and I see there is some golf. That would go over well with the husbands while we shop the town. Any recs? Do you think it would be a good place for a long weekend? Previous trips have been New Orleans, Vegas, Cancun.....

I've been, but only on day trips from Guanajuato. I think it would make a nice long weekend. If you go, make sure you do a day trip to Guanajuato which is my favorite town in Mexico. We are actually doing a trip with two other couples in September--4 nights in Mexico City and 3 nights in Guanajuato (with a day trip to San Miguel).

I have been twice. I like it, but it is very touristy. I would actually recommend Queretaro more - more authentic and cheaper.

I just watched Patty Jinsch's show where she was in Guanajuato and I now need to go.

You definitely should go. It's easy to get there too. You can go for a long weekend!
