I am planning a very last minute trip to Germany, flying in and out of Munich. We leave in a week! I have been before, twice actually, but never with kids. My girls are 6 and 9 and are excellent travelers. My mom is also coming along for the fun. Goals include staying in a charming medieval town, seeing castles, a half day of luge and fun in the Alps and ~2 days in Munich. I have rented and driven a car in Germany before and found the process very enjoyable. We arrive very early the first day. *Tentative* plan is: Day 1- rent our car and drive to Rothenburg OTD. I remember it being a darling town and I think my girls would love walking the wall and also the Nightwatchman's Tour. Day 2- Head toward Neuschwanstein. Most likely tour the castle in the morning and then drive to either Oberammergau or the Tegelberg Luge for some mountain side fun. Make our way to Prien am Chiemsee. Day 3- Herrenchiemsee. Friends toured this last year with their children and just raved. It was one of the favorite things they did. End our day in Munich where we will drop our car. Day 4-5 Munich Day 6- Fly home.
This is a very ROUGH outline and kind of my first draft. It looks like we'd be in the car ~2 hours each day, breaking it up with some stops. It's not ideal to stay in 4 hotels but having a car will make that process a bit more simple.

What time do you arrive on day 1?
My dad and husband did the Tegelberg luge after our visit to Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein. They liked it a lot. For the castles, I would see about getting tickets in advance because otherwise you could spend 2-3 hours waiting in line.
Oberammergau, Ettal, and Garmisch Partenkirchen were all great stops and very close to Neuschwannstein. Taking the gondola up the Zugspitze was an adventure. The Andechs monastery and brewery was a great dinnerstop for us. It is just south of Munich. Near Oberammergau is also Linderhof, which is another castle of King Ludwig II. He actually spent his final years there. It is not nearly as touristy as Neuschwannstein but beautiful inside and out.
When we went we stayed in one place in Starnberg, just south of Munich. We only had one day in Munich but parked our car at a railway station just outside the city and took the train in. Drove around the rest of the time. We didn't go to Rothenburg though and only passed the Chiemsee on our way to the next stop near Hallstatt.
dutchgirl678, Thank you! We arrive fairly early, 7:15am. So we have a full day. I'll be fine driving, knowing I'll most likely get a little nap that afternoon in Rothenburg, most likely before the Night Watchman's Tour.
Have you left yet? I'll post something longer on the whole trip later, but in Munich, the kids (5 and 9) really enjoyed the Deutches Musuem, the Rezidenz and Treasury, and going up in the Rathaus tower at Marienplatz, and then around Garmisch-Partenkirchen, both kids really loved Neuschwanstein (and would have liked to see Hohenschwangau if we had had time) and the Zugspitze, and the Tegelberg alpine slide/playground/etc.
With more time we would have stopped in Ettal and seen Linderhoff Schloss too.
I swear we could have spent a month over there and still had tons more to see on our list. We loved it!

We are here now! I’m glad I checked back today is our final day in Munich. Kids did great on Mike’s Bike Tour yesterday and today we’ll explore Munich. Glad you had a great trip! I’ll be sad to leave tomorrow.

I'd definitely try to do the Rezidenz and Treasury- crown jewels and AMAZING interiors.
We're kind of toying with the idea of going back just to Garmisch in a couple of years and meeting up with our friends before they move back to the US. We loved it there so much!
