So I live in Frederick, MD near Camp David and therefore the G8 summit today. I also work at the local soup kitchen as a regular volunteer. On the 3rd Friday of every month (coincidentally tonight), I also bring kids from the youth group I work with. The kids are committed to doing this community service every month by their own choice.
The downtown Frederick soup kitchen is a hot mess already. It only provides one meal a day (dinner) for two measly hours (5-7pm) every night. It isn't enough. We are the 2nd or 3rd largest city in MD any given year. We have a population of just over 65,000 people. The homeless population is relatively low (only around 300ish) for this, but we still don't have the time or resources for everyone to get fed who shows up in this window every night.
What does that have to do with the G8? Well, most of the protesters that are here are focusing their discussion on ending hunger. But last night I received an email, which I read this morning, that told me it was especially important to have extra volunteers tonight because instead of the homeless people who really need it, we are expected to feed about 500 security officers and protestors in our two hour window. Because the city, in its infinite wisdom, decided this was a good idea.
FWIW, I'm still going and so are the kids to volunteer. I told them that even though this sucks, they made a commitment to doing this once a month on this night and just because we don't like it, doesn't mean it wouldn't be irresponsible to break our commitment. On the other hand, I'm really tempted to bring a cake to serve to all these assholes, just to see if they get the reference compared to what they're doing. How deliciously ironic that protesting world hunger is leading to the hungry people in my city not being able to get food tonight and all that.

Wow.
I have to say though, I'm so effing glad that G8 was moved from Chicago. I can't even imagine what it would be like right now with both them AND NATO meeting here.
