I am away for two days at an offsite leadership meeting. I drove and brought a small bag with just the basics including clothes for tomorrow. After our session today and about 30 minutes before we had to meet again for dinner, I check into the hotel. The first thing that I do is pull out the outfit and turn on the iron. I like to press out the packing creases and hang things up.
I place the warm iron on the blouse and within a second, the entire right breast of the shirt melts. And leaves a fist sized hole. I have never seen anything like it.
It is now 5:13. I immediately have multiple scenarios running in my head. Do I drive 2 hours home? Do I ask my husband to drive 4 hours round trip with the kids? Do I wear the same shirt tomorrow? Can I borrow something? What stores are nearby and will they be open after this mandatory dinner?
So at 5:14, I go to yelp, type in "clothing" and see a Greene St Consignment shop literally a four minute walk away. So I grab my wallet, and power walk over to the store. I quickly explain my situation to the man at the counter and he proceeds to show me where I might find a black top. I grab the first thing that catches my eye, looks cute. Give him 14 dollars and then proceed to power walk back to the hotel to arrive with a perfect hole-free shirt for tomorrow by 5:33.
I was just beyond impressed with my resourcefulness and damn luck. And despite having a bunch of Greene Streets in Philly, I have never went into one until today. And my new home happens to be located on another Greene St.. I don't think it is a coincidence.
Moral of the story (that plenty of you probably know) - always bring a back up shirt!!
Yup! Pumping/ BFing taught me that one as well as kids accidents.
We didn’t have extra pants and underwear on us and DD had an accident. Actually that happened several times because she had accidents like a year after being potty trained for no reason. Off to the store.
Also multiple trips to the store for forgotten pump parts.
I can't believe it just melted a giant hole in your shirt! Hotel irons always scare me, since I have a very expensive, very nice iron at home and I know exactly how it works with different fabrics.
I am a notorious over-packer for work trips and end up with a ton of clothes that I never wear. But, when I go visit my family, I often end up bumming clothes off my sister because I apparently forget how to pack a complete outfit.
I had an unexpected, off schedule monthly occurrence out in the middle of nowhere on my way to a conference. Thankfully, I came across a town big enough to have an Old Navy and other stores. Picked up a new pair of pants that I didn't really need, but were cute.
I literally do 1 extra outfit per each 3 days, lol. Like it’s a math equation. And usually also throw in an extra shirt.
I also always throw in an extra bra since the time my client decided in the field that we would take a 3 mile hike in humid weather in work boots and jeans, so my bra was soaked with sweat and stunk like crazy. I washed it in the hotel with shampoo (now I also carry little packets of Woolite that look like ketchup packets) and dried it with a hair dryer. It was still a tiny bit damp.

I went to court about 10 years ago for work, wearing a uniform and expecting to make the 2 hour drive home that night. We ended up having to stay for the next day and I hadn't brought extra clothes, so I rushed out to the nearest store which happened to be a Nordstrom's. Ten years later I'm still wearing my favorite sweat pants that I bought to sleep in that night.
Very timely as last night I was trying to figure out what to pack for NY next week. Will pack an extra shirt. I always look at those capsule wardrobe travel suggestions and think “are there people who can wear the same thing without incident while traveling successfully?”
Vent - the NYSE guest attire rules are business casual for guys and business for women. This isn’t the current set I was sent, but it gives you an idea. The current says business casual for guys, no tie and polo shirts ok. It says business for women. I was planning to wear a suit with between ankle and cropped pants and it says full length pants. So I’m frustrated. www.nyse.com/publicdocs/nyse/markets/nyse/rule-interpretations/2015/NYSE%2015-1.pdf
Oh yes, similar things happen to me all the time! Often I just flat out forget something. I have rebought a full set of makeup multiple times, and had a cabdriver in a random city take me to a 24-hour Walmart to buy a bra at midnight
sdlaura - I somehow doubt it, but that would be fun!! It’s supposed to rain so I’m trying to figure out shoes and clothes and not getting drenched. Ugh.
