Ok so the packing question reminded me....
I have been kind of looking at capsule wardrobe stuff. I had cleaned out my closet recently and got rid of so much stuff I don't wear, and yet I still have so much stuff I don't wear.
I should add, I'm the opposite of trendy. I've seen online where people pick a capsule someone recommends and then buys the stuff and follows a calendar. That kind of sounds like heaven to me because I don't care what I wear as long as I don't look like an idiot. Or completely and totally frumpy.
It sounds appealing, but is it just one of those things that you try and waste time on and it doesn't help with anything? Or is it awesome? Anyone tried?
I don't have a "capsule wardrobe" but I have made a concerted effort to only buy certain colors that all go together. I used to be notorious for grabbing something on sale, then realizing it's a color that doesn't go with anything else in my wardrobe. So now I try to stick to my signature colors - black, teal, maroon, purple, navy. I can add pops of color with jewelery, but I at least know that my outfits are fairly interchangeable. I also wear jeans or leggings to work every day, so that helps.
I think this was advice that someone on here gave at one point and it really resonated with me. 2chatter was it you?

twinmomma - might have been me because I do that but I can’t remember if I do that because of convos here too!! It works! Today I am touring a senior living place for my mom and I paired a maroon floral dress that’s short in front and strappy on top with an olive cardigan to bring it to an appropriate level. I love being able to totally modify the vibe of outfits like that! My colors are grey, maroon, navy, black and olive with some royal blue and grassy green.
A friend uses one of those wardrobe planners and she always looks amazing. I have no idea how much she’s dropping on it though because it’s all Loft and Nordstrom and up from there. I look at their seasonal teasers to get an idea of how to wear what I have. I also wander around Altr’d State every fall for ideas.
3.5 years ago, I worked with a personal stylist consultant to purge my closet (got rid of about.. 95% of my stuff), and replace with classic/streamlined/versatile pieces. It worked really well and I was happy about it, but it was a lot of repeating the same stuff. (Men repeat ALL THE TIME and no one notices. Women repeat and people - even men - notice)
And then I got pregnant and bought new clothes. And had a baby but wasn't my pre-pregnancy size and bought new clothes. I tried to keep to a basic color scheme (navy, cream, burgundy/maroon) and got a Le Tote subscription to add some life to it. This worked well for a while.
Along the way, I purchased pieces from Le Tote that I either liked or because I liked 3-4/5 things in the box and it was cheaper to buy all 5 pieces than to only by 3-4. So now my closet is full of bloat again.
That's my roundabout way of saying that if you can commit to it and stick with it, it's a great idea. But it's expensive, and you may be prone into slipping into old habits.
I did the same as twinmomma only gray is another one of my colors and k3am. It was back in 2011, so I need to do it again because yes I’ve slipped back into bad habits. Mine is not lots of clothes but rather they are not as classic and don’t all match.
